Holiday Hoops Shoot-Out
A record number of 69 basketball
teams from 39 Missouri high schools
will converge on the campus of
North Central Missouri College for
the 2009 High School Holiday
Hoops sponsored by the NCMC
Foundation. Schools from as far
away as Hannibal, Centralia,
Maryville, and Lexington will be
joined by schools from throughout
north Missouri to participate in 48 boys and girls ball games – all to be
played at the Ketcham Community Center. ―Over 300 community vol-

 Trenton Hy-Vee Food Store
Hy-Vee Food Store was established in 1930, with the store in Trenton opening in 1944. The company will celebrate its
80th Anniversary in 2010. Hy-Vee is an employee-owned company. They are the recipient of the 2005 Trenton Area
Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year Award.
Hy-Vee is a full service grocery store offering one stop shopping. They provide a full service Meat department offering
Blue Ribbon or Amana hand cut meats, and a Cheese Isle that specializes in shaved meats and cheese, sliced fresh while
you wait. The Hy-Vee Pharmacy offers a convenient drive up lane while also providing a $4.00 and $10.00 generic drug
program to save you money. The Hy-Vee Bakery prides itself on baking on site from scratch, including their cakes for all
occasions and all sizes. Their Kitchen offers home-style cooking. You can dine in or have your event catered by their pro-
fessional staff. Hy-Vee’s Photo Lab offers one hour development or you can even send your pictures online for profes-
sional in store printing. The Produce department features produce from around the world, freshness guaranteed. The Fro-
zen and Dairy departments provide the newest items at the best value, and lastly, they have a Garden Center that is
open every year from March through July.
Hy-Vee offers weekly ads and you can sign up to receive these ads electronically at Hy-Vee is open

 City of Trenton
The City of Trenton is located in the Green Hills of Grundy County, Missouri. First known as Lomax Store and Bluff Grove,
Trenton was incorporated in 1857 and serves as the county seat. Industry, agriculture, and retail trade provide the City’s
economic base.
The services provided by the City include: fire protection, police protection, parks, street department, an airport, and
economic development. Trenton Municipal Utilities include electricity, water treatment, and wastewater treatment.
The City of Trenton’s City Council is comprised of: Mayor Cathie Smith, Ed Holt, Jim Bush, Chuck Elliott, Jim Norris, Larry
Huffstutter, Kenneth Ewing, Nick Mchargue, and Joe Foster.
The City currently employs 80 full-time workers. City Hall is located at 1100 Main Street, and is open from 8:00am –

The Trenton Republican Times (RT) newspaper, which was established in 1864, is currently under the operation of Pub-
lisher Wendell Lenhart. The newspaper’s Editor is Diane Lowrey. The RT is the oldest continuous business in Grundy County
and proud to be a strong supporter of our community.
The Republican Times provides complete coverage of all local news and sports on a daily basis, Monday through Friday.
They also produce The Green Hills Weekly which provides advertising services to every home in the Trenton area. The
nearly 13,000 circulation covers all of Grundy and Mercer counties as well as parts of the other surrounding counties.
Several special sections are printed throughout the year covering fall and winter sports, Missouri Day, and special events
such as Trenton's Sesquicentennial and the opening of Dr. Albert and Vera Cross Hall on the North Central Missouri Col-
lege campus.
The RT currently employs 17 full and part-time workers as well as an additional 14 independent contractors who deliver

 Moore’s Home Center
Moore’s Home Center is a family owned business and is operated by Mark Moore and Bridgette Bunnell. The business
was started by James and Ben Moore in December of 1960. James purchased Ben’s portion of the store in 1975.
Moore’s specializes in all different kinds of floor covering. Some of those coverings include ceramic tile, vinyl, laminate,
hardwood, and several different types and textures of carpet. Moore’s also sells Benjamin Moore Paints. Mark does most
of the installation himself and Bridgette is an interior designer. They attend seminars throughout the year which help them
stay up to date on all of the latest products and trends within the industry.
Moore’s Home Center is very active in the community and has been active in many events and projects that the Chamber
has sponsored. They also donated the paint for the new NCMC Indoor Baseball facility.
The store is open 8:00am-5:00pm Monday – Friday and 8:00am -12:00pm on Saturday. They are located at 2924

Hyde Mansion Bed & Breakfast
The Hyde Mansion Bed & Breakfast is owned and operated by Robert and Carolyn Brown. They have been managing
the Bed & Breakfast since 1988. The mansion was originally built for Governor Hyde and his wife. However, Gov. Hyde
died before the home was completed. Mrs. Hyde lived in the home for several years.
The mansion offers six distinctive guest rooms, each with private baths, phones, TVs, and wireless internet. The mansion
also includes a large formal dining room, a living room with a fireplace and piano, a commercial grade kitchen, a break-
fast room, a sun porch, a sitting room, a grand entrance, and a beautiful staircase.
The mansion is open year round. Commercial rates are available for businesses, and weekly rates are available for
those wanting to stay for an extended period of time.

Flowers by Sarah
Flowers by Sarah, which was established in 1986, is owned and operated by Sarah
Rorebeck. Sarah is a third generation floral designer and is a member of the SAF
(Society of American Florists).
Flowers by Sarah specializes in both fresh and silk flowers. They provide flowers
worldwide through wire services such as Teleflora and FTD. In addition to flowers,
Sarah sells a variety of other products. Some of the products include: plants, balloons,
cards, crystal, angels (including Willow Tree), Bearington Bears, party ware, and sev-
eral other gift ideas.
Flowers by Sarah also offers tuxedo rentals for proms, weddings, and other special
occasions. They also rent out other items for wedding such as candelabras and arches.
The store is open 8:00am-5:00pm Monday – Friday and 8:00am -12:00pm on Satur-

 5th Annual Radio Auction December 5, 2009
The 5th annual Chamber of Commerce Radio Auction is upon us. Be sure to tune
in to KTTN 92.3 FM on Saturday, December 5th just after the 8:30am sports
show. We have many great items for you to bid on just in time for Christmas.
You’re sure to find something for everyone on your list. Listed on the next page
is a partial sale bill of the items being auctioned off this year. We are so
thankful for all the businesses who have supported the Chamber through this
event as well as the patrons. We are also very thankful for our volunteers who
make the event happen: our board members and ambassadors. We couldn’t do

 New Member: Cabins in the Woods
Help me in welcoming our newest Chamber Member, Cabins in the Woods. Connie
Hurst is the contact person for Cabins in the Woods. They are located west of
Trenton on Hwy 6 about four miles. When you see the American Flag at SW 52nd
Avenue, turn north. Follow the road 1 mile to the cabin entrance at Cypress Ave-

 Recipes for your Palate
                    Looking for a new recipe to try this holiday season? Here are a couple of favorites.

                     Christmas Punch                                          Cauliflower with Cheese Sauce

                                                                       Cauliflower, cooked according to directions
                   1 pkg cherry Kool-aid
                1 pkg strawberry Kool-aid                                                  Sauce:
                         1 cup sugar                                            1 T butter        1 T flour
                      2 qt. cold water                                         1 cup milk       1/8 tsp salt
              1 small can frozen orange juice                                1 1/2 C cubed Velveeta Cheese
               1 small can frozen lemonade                                   1/2 tsp sugar Dash of pepper
                 1 2-liter bottle ginger ale                                              Paprika

   Mix all of the above ingredients in large punch bowl.       Melt butter in small saucepan. Remove from heat & blend

                  Sweet Potato Casserole                                       Slow Cooker Bean & Barley Soup

                                                              1 cup dried multibean mix or Great Northern beans,
            3 cups cold mashed sweet potatoes             picked over and rinsed
                        1 cup sugar
                                                          · 6 cups water
                       1/2 cup milk
                 1/4 cup butter, softened                 · 1 (14-ounce) can whole tomatoes, with juice
                          3 eggs                          · 3 cloves garlic, smashed
                         1 tsp salt                       · 2 ribs celery, chopped
                       1 tsp vanilla                      · 2 medium carrots, chopped
                                                          · 1/2 medium onion, chopped
         Mix together and place in 9 x 13 pan.            · 1/2 cup pearl barley
                                                          · 1 bay leaf
                          Topping:                        · 1 1/2 T Kosher salt
              1/2 cup packed brown sugar                  · 2 tsp dried Italian herb blend
                 1/2 cup chopped pecans                   · Freshly ground black pepper
                       1/4 cup flour
                                                          · 1/2 oz dried porcini mushrooms, optional
                     2 tsp cold butter
                                                          · 3 cups baby spinach leaves
Mix ingredients together to make a crumbly mix and sprin- · 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan
                  kle on top of potatoes.                 · 1 T Balsamic vinegar
           Bake at 325° for 45 to 50 minutes.             · Extra Virgin Olive Oil

                Sugar Cookies, Classic Rolled                     Put beans, water, tomatoes and their juices, garlic, celery,

                                                                  herb blend, pepper, and porcini mushrooms (if using) in a
               3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour                       slow cooker; cover and cook on LOW until the beans are
                        1/2 t salt                                quite tender and the soup is thick, about 8 hours.
           1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, softened
               1 1/2 cups granulated sugar                        Stir in the spinach, cheese, and vinegar, cover, and let the
                  1 1/2 t vanilla extract                         soup cook until the spinach wilts, about 5 minutes. Taste and
                      3 large eggs                                season with salt and black pepper, to taste.
           Colored sugars and granulated sugar
                                                                  Ladle the soup into warmed bowls and drizzle each serving
   Whisk flour and salt together in a small bowl. In large
  bowl with an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat
butter until creamy, about 2 minutes. Add granulated sugar
 gradually and beat until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes;
beat in vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after
each. Add about one-third of flour mixture and mix on low
  speed. Gradually add remaining flour, mixing just until
 blended. Scrape dough onto large piece of plastic wrap,
form into 2 very flat discs, cover completely with wrap, and
 refrigerate until firm enough to roll out, at least 2 hours or
  overnight. Preheat oven to 350° F. Line 2 cookie sheets
with parchment paper. Take 1 disc and roll out to 1/4 inch
thickness on floured surface. Cut out cookies with shapes of
   your choice. Place on cookie sheet, decorate and bake
                       about ten minutes.
