 Spiritual Gifts- Week 11
The Elephant in the Room
     The Importance of the Issue
• Sign & Wonder gifts could significantly affect
  how evangelism is practiced
• Our view of gifts speaks about the relationship
we have with the Holy Spirit
• Our view of sign and wonder gifts is usual is
related to our personal experience with them
          A Historical Overview
• In 1906 the Azusa Street Revival began a series of
revivals across the U.S. emphasizing the sign and
wonder gifts starting the Pentecostal movement
• In the 1960’s the charismatic movement spread to
  mainline denominations including Catholics
• The result was many churches wound up splitting
over the issue of charismatic gifts
• In 1977 John Wimber started what became known
as the 3rd Wave or Vineyard Movement which
  moderated the charismatic movement
     Arguments in Favor of the
   Temporary Nature of Some Gifts
• This is the position held by Martin Luther, John
  Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon,
John Mac Arthur and Chuck Swindoll
• The signs and wonders are special ministry of
  the apostles (Acts 2:43-44, 5:22-23, 14:3, 15:2)
• Paul’s defense of his apostolic ministry was
based on the signs he performed (2 Cor 2:12)
• The example of Church history shows no one has
ever repeated the ministry of the Apostles
The Arguments in Favor of the
 Permanent Nature of Spiritual Gifts
• This position is held by Martyn Lloyd-Jones,
A.W. Tozer, John Wimber and John Piper
• Nowhere in Scripture does it say sign and
  wonder gifts are temporary
• Signs and wonders were performed by people
other than the apostles in the Book of Acts (Acts
  6:8 and 8:6)
• Paul gave teaching on sign gifts to churches in
  his epistles (Galatians 3:5, 1 Corinthians 12:7-11)
   Where Does This Leave Us?
• The cessationist argument is something
changed with the ending of the apostles
• When God makes a change in the plan, He
makes it very clear things have changed
• For example, when evangelism was
expanded to the Gentiles & Jewish food laws
• John 14:12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who
has faith in me will do what I have been
doing. He will do even greater things than
these, because I am going to the Father.”
      1 Corinthians 13 & Sign Gifts
• 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 “Love never fails. But where
there are prophecies, they will cease; where there
are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is
knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part
and we prophesy in part, but when perfection
  comes, the imperfect disappears.”
• So is that when the NT Scriptures were
completed or is this when Jesus returns?
• Verse 12 is talk about the same thing verse 10 is-
  when the perfect comes
                  Conclusion
• Consider this: when you say all the gifts are not
in operation are we saying we do not need your
gift here? We don’t need you here?
• How are you praying?
• Acts 4:29-30 “Now, Lord, consider their threats
and enable Your servants to speak Your word
with great boldness. Stretch out Your hand to
heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders
through the name of Your holy servant Jesus."
       Shine, Jesus Shine
Lord, the light of Your love in shining
In the midst of the darkness shining
Jesus, Light of the World shine upon us
Set us free by the truth You now bring us
Shine on me, shine on me
                  Chorus
             Shine, Jesus shine
Fill this land with the Father’s glory
            Blaze, Spirit, blaze
           Set our hearts on fire
              Flow, river flow
Flood the nations with grace and mercy
           Sent forth Your Word
Lord and let there be light
Lord, I come to Your awesome presence
From the shadows into Your radiance
By the blood I may enter Your brightness
Search me, try me, consume all my darkness
Shine on me, shine on me
                  Chorus
             Shine, Jesus shine
Fill this land with the Father’s glory
            Blaze, Spirit, blaze
           Set our hearts on fire
              Flow, river flow
Flood the nations with grace and mercy
           Sent forth Your Word
Lord and let there be light
As we gaze on Your kingly brightness
So our faces display Your likeness
Ever changing from glory to glory
Mirrored here may our lives tell Your story
Shine on me, shine on me
                  Chorus
             Shine, Jesus shine
Fill this land with the Father’s glory
            Blaze, Spirit, blaze
           Set our hearts on fire
              Flow, river flow
Flood the nations with grace and mercy
           Sent forth Your Word
Lord and let there be light
