Antennas and Propagation in Mobile
A two-day course on the design and use of base station antennas, terminal
antennas and radio propagation in mobile communication systems.
Dr. Claes Beckman, Director KTH Center for Wireless Systems (course leader),
This course provides the students an overview of existing antenna systems for mobile
communications. In particular it deals with base station antenna specifics such as
Radiation patterns, Beamwidth, Side-lobes, Directivity, Gain and Polarization.
It furthermore couples the antenna performance to the radio channel by discussing
Directivity and effective area, Friis’ transmission formula, Antenna temperature and
The course examines different Cellular and Sector systems, Radio propagation and link
budgets. The issue of Fading and Antenna diversity is discussed both from the
perspective of the base station as well as the mobile. Finally the always-current issue of
"Smart antennas" such as Fixed beam or Adaptive antenna systems is briefly presented.
Who should attend?
This course is particularly aimed addressed to engineers within the mobile
