             Today’s trash
• First we collected how many pounds each
camper’s family made in two days.
• To find the number of pounds each camper
made, we divided the number of pounds by
  the number of people.
• Then we calculated the number of pounds
of trash each camper would make each year.
          Today’s Trash
• Each camper makes this much trash each
  year.

              584 lb.
• “That’s a lot of trash”!!!!
            The Wake Landfill
 At the wake landfill there is about 700,000 tons of
trash. Of those 700,000 tons of trash less than 1%
  is not recyclable.
 Two Saturdays a month you can bring toxic things
like unused paint, household cleaners, motor oil,
  etc…
 30% of the trash at the landfill is paper which goes
to show that we could recycle more of our paper to
  save space.
          A way to Recycle
 If you bring an unused or unopened
item, it will be placed on a table called
the salvage shelf. You could pick
something that you like or might be
useful to you. The items on the salvage
 shelf are free.

  Reasons for Recycling
• It takes about 75,000 trees to make the Sunday
edition of the New York Times.
• If all Americans recycled 1/10 of there papers they
would save 25 million trees a year.
• It takes 95% less energy to make aluminum by
recycling it than by producing it from its natural
ore, bauxite. It costs less too.
• For every glass bottle we recycle we save up enough
energy to light up a 100 watt light bulb for 4 hours
• Every hour, 2.5 million plastic bottles are thrown
  out by Americans.
Even More Reasons

• In 1991, the Great Wall of China became
the second largest man-made structure in
the world. The largest was Fresh Kills
Landfill, serving New York City. It is now
the highest point on the east coast. The
highest point in most counties in North
  Carolina is a landfill.
