                                       Introduction

In the course of the UN celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Convention on Contracts
for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) and the 20th anniversary of the UNCITRAL
Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, the UNCITRAL has launched a series
of regional conferences in 2005 in some selected venues with the prospect of presenting the
multi-phased practical experiences of applying the said Convention and Model Law in
different parts of the world. This is meant to address a vast range of audience all over the
globe in the context of a "celebration- of- success" series of events.

Within the bounds of this, the UNCITRAL approached the Cairo Arbitration Centre to
organize two of these regional conferences in Cairo successively from 12 – 15 September
2005 (starting by the Arbitration Conference (12-13 September) then the CISG Conference
(14-15 September)). The Conferences are exclusively designed to address the African and
Arab Region in an international context. It is worth noting that the first couple of events in
the series of UN regional Conferences were held in March 2005 in Vienna and the Cairo
Conferences will be succeeded by two similar ones in Singapore.
