      Inline Power Details

     • In unpowered state, Cisco IP
       Phone Tx and Rx pairs are
       shorted using a normally
       closed relay
     • Test signal transmitted from
       switch to phone loops back
       to the switch
     • Low pass filter prevents any
       other signal to loopback
     • When switch receives test
       tone it knows device is Cisco
       IP phone and it applies power
     • Cisco IP phone powers up
       and normally closed relay

      Catalyst Switch <-> Phone Interaction
      “Plug-and-Play” Operation

      • Unpowered phone plugs into powered line-card port
      • Port senses the device using phone discovery mechanism and reports it
        to the supervisor
      • Supervisor checks power budget, allocates default amount, and informs
