Symposium Goal
To improve the opportunity for successful recovery of the brain-injured patient through an educational update on new and relevant medical issues and advances in brain injury rehabilitation.
■
Educational Objectives
Extra space for gutter/staples
Upon completion of this conference, participants should be better able to: ■ Explain the difficulties inherent in the functional assessment of frontal lobe development, and outline the trajectory of functional development of the frontal lobe. ■ Review a representative sampling of current neuropsychological measures of frontal lobe integrity and development. ■ Identify the most common types of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and discuss how to evaluate TBI patients. ■ Identify surgical and nonsurgical treatment for TBI. ■ Diagnose sleep disorders associated with TBI, and recommend appropriate treatment strategies for sleep disorders and central nervous system trauma.

Describe robotic devices and techniques currently available for rehabilitation of upper and lower extremities, and analyze their benefits and limitations. Discuss evidence-based results of the utilization of therapeutic robotics for stroke rehabilitation, and examine the potential of rehabilitation robotics as an evaluation tool. Determine when robotic therapy is appropriate, and explain how to tailor robotic therapy to meet the patient’s needs. Discuss the theoretical basis of constraint-induced (CI) therapy, overcoming learned nonuse and promoting use-dependent cortical reorganization. Explain the basic protocol of constraint-induced therapy, and review the techniques used to improve motor function in the upper extremity following a stroke. Review physical therapy interventions for patients with vestibular dysfunction, and identify patients who would benefit from vestibular rehabilitation.

Recognize the importance of conducting and documenting patient examinations that can withstand the scrutiny of a Daubert challenge in federal courts. Explain the admissibility of expert scientific/medical testimony under Daubert and discuss its potential impact on patient care. Define the role and responsibilities of a medical/rehabilitation expert who participates in federal proceedings. Distinguish between credibility and admissibility of expert medical/ rehabilitation testimony, and design assessments that meet the criteria for admissibility in the courtroom. Determine the impact of hidden disabilities on substance abuse treatment for people with TBI. Discuss the problems with existing tools and summarize the process for improvement of present screening tools for substance abuse in TBI patients. Identify the early warning signs of an escalation in an individual’s behavior, and implement effective, safe intervention strategies to prevent behavior from further escalating. Describe the incidence and prevalence of concussions in the adolescent athlete. Review an empirical model program to assist licensed athletic trainers in making return-to-play decisions. Discuss the methodologies for assessing neurocognitive effects of concussions in high school athletes. Explain the role of prophylactic antiepileptic medication. Review the impact of seizures on the patient with brain injury and recognize when to expect seizures as a complication of a brain injury.
