The National Multiple Sclerosis Society Mid-Atlantic Chapter 2008 Bike Shop Partnership Proposal The mission of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is to end the devastating effects of MS. National MS Society, Mid-Atlantic Chapter Bike MS Partnership Proposal Background Information About the National MS Society What is the National Multiple Sclerosis Society? The National Multiple Sclerosis Society serves the needs of more than 400,000 individuals and their families living with multiple sclerosis. In addition to funding educational programs and services for people with MS and serving as a source for information and referral, the National MS Society funds national and international research into the cause, prevention, cure, and treatment of multiple sclerosis. The Society is the only national, voluntary multiple sclerosis health organization that meets the standards of all major agencies that rate non-profit groups. Since its founding in 1946, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has invested over $460 million in medical research, with $35 million awarded towards research in 2004 alone. The investment is paying off! The National MS Society has supported over 300 research projects with significant advances in both the quest for a cure and better diagnoses, rehabilitation, and symptomatic therapy for people with MS. The National MS Society supports more MS research and serves more people with MS than any other national, voluntary MS organization in the world. The Mid-Atlantic Chapter The Mid-Atlantic Chapter provides services and programs to 6,800 people in the Carolinas region with MS. The Society depends on support from members, friends, staff and the public at large-to end the devastating effects of MS. Funds are raised through a combination of individual donations, proceeds from special events, corporate contributions, and donor initiated planned gifts. Forty percent of our chapter’s annual income is devoted to national programs and research into the cause and cure of MS; the remaining sixty percent is spent on local services and programs for families living with MS in South Carolina and 33 counties of Western North Carolina. The Mid-Atlantic Chapter has offices or staff in Charlotte, NC and Columbia, Greenville, and Charleston, SC. National MS Society, Mid-Atlantic Chapter Bike MS Partnership Proposal Information about Multiple Sclerosis What is Multiple Sclerosis? Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Primary symptoms include weakness; fatigue; tremor; pain; bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction; spasticity; paralysis; and visual changes or loss. Diagnosis usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 50, but the unpredictable physical and emotional effects can be life-long. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are giving hope to those affected by the disease. The brain acts like a switchboard sending electrical messages along the nerves to various parts of the body. These messages control all our conscious and unconscious movements. Healthy nerves are insulated by myelin, the tissue surrounding nerve fibers. Myelin helps messages flow smoothly along the nerve pathways. In MS, the myelin breaks down and is replaced by scar tissue that can distort or even block nerve messages. Body functions become uncontrollable because the brain’s messages can’t get through. Who gets Multiple Sclerosis? Twice as many women as men are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Most people are diagnosed with the disease between the ages of 20 and 50, but the disease has been diagnosed in children and teens. MS occurs more commonly among Caucasians, especially those of Northern European ancestry, but people of African, Asian and Hispanic backgrounds are not immune. There are approximately 400,000 Americans with MS. Every week 200 people are diagnosed with the disease - that’s more than one an hour. What are the annual costs? The average annual cost of MS exceeds $34,000 per person, with lifetime costs exceeding $2.2 million. Persons with more severe disability experience far higher costs. The largest item is lost wages, averaging in excess of $17,900 annually. Health care costs average in excess of $16,000 per person annually. The disease-modifying drugs (Avonex, Betaseron & Copaxone) add $10,000 or more to the cost of medications and care. Persons with more progressive forms of MS have much higher costs, averaging in excess of $49,084 annually. These figures were derived from Nicholas LaRocca, PhD, Director, Health Care Delivery and Policy Research from a study of 606 persons with multiple sclerosis. Almost everyone (98%) in the study had health insurance. Many were covered under Medicare or Medicaid.
