historic and famous pelicans of Mykonos was picked up by local fisherman Mr. Paniotis Faroupos on the 29th February 2008 with a serious neck injury and other smaller wounds. She was found swimming in the sea on the southwest side of the island near Prasonia (towards Delos) surrounded by attacking seagulls. Mr. Faroupos called the town hall who requested the help of Mykonos animal welfare. The wildlife section (T.A.Z) and Vice mayor Thanassi Megas took the pelican to Vet Nikos Triantafillou. After 2 hours of intense surgery and expert care with Nikos, the bird was then taken to the Hunters association of Mykonos where they (and visits from her friend Ilias) cared for her until 18th March when the stitches were removed. It is unclear what caused the injury but Yorgia is now on the mend and free to roam the narrow streets of Mykonos again. Thanks to all involved.

Who is M.A.W.?
People call every day, several times a day. Help with an injured dog, a sick cat, abandoned puppies, help with free food or sterilizations, and help with the pelican. People call sometimes at midnight and other times early morning when some of us work late night shifts. Everyone who calls expects help and expects a solution, which many times we just don’t have. We do what we can. Many of you who know about M.A.W. (Mykonos Animal Welfare) are under the impression that we are a fully funded, organized charity with many volunteers and financial help. THIS IS NOT SO. We are simply five normal people working voluntarily and striving to do our best with little government or community help. At the same time we all work and have families. AT TIMES IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO LIVE UP TO THE DEMANDS. THE CONTINUOUS NEED FOR CASH IS RELENTLESS. WE NEED YOU TO BE GENEROUS AND HELP THE SITUATION BY DONATING ANYTHING

A DESPERATE APPEAL
Last year for the first time we managed to rehouse thirteen dogs outside of Greece as well as many here in Mykonos. Most of the dogs found homes in Germany. By creating our website www.mykonosanimals.com we were able to show photographs and receive e-mails from people who wanted to come on holiday to Mykonos and adopt a new pet at the same time. This way we were able to find wonderful loving homes for most of our homeless dogs last year and fully intend to continue the same way this summer. We need you to take care of a dog in your garden for a short time. All our dogs are good with children and are happy with other dogs.
What we have a real problem with and what we cannot do alone is housing all the dogs we find mostly during the winter months.
Dogs that urgently need your good home!
How you can help!
Fostering a dog for a few weeks or a few months is the best way you can help the dogs and our homeless dogs programme. When we receive a phone call saying a dog has been found, our immediate response is panic, where will we put him / her for a short time to keep him safe, while we arrange a permanent home. Many times we are unable to pick up the dog and he remains on the streets, with prayers that he doesn’t get hit by a car, poisoned, shot or bashed on the head by a rock (which one dog has recently showed us). We are desperately trying to find just a few people who have a yard and who are willing to have a dog with them on a short term basis. Winter is the most difficult time to house a dog permanently and with many people not working in the winter, there must be someone out there who can help. We can provide the dog house and the food if necessary all you have to provide is a little space.
From February 2006 - February 2007 recorded info only 55 dogs have been helped. 5 were reunited with their owners PLEASE MICROCHIP 1 only had a microchip with inaccurate details 3 had serious leg injuries that needed medical attention 22 puppies The rest were healthy and abandoned. 13 were housed abroad at great expense, time and energy.
PLEASE VOLUNTEER TO FOSTER ONE OF OUR DOGS. CALL US ON 6955 582372
“Senna”, was found with her collar growing into her neck. In this photo you can see that it had to be surgically removed. She lived in our office for 7 weeks as we had no foster home, adopting a couple of teddies for company. She is now living with a loving family in Germany.

Our various events this past year have resulted in raising over 8,768.00 Euro!! So well done to everyone who participated in any way to achieve this great result. The Christmas Bazaar was almost a wash out due to very cold and wet weather conditions and with a last minute decision to “just do it” we all ran down to the port almost two hours late and eventually managed to raise more than 4,000 Euro. Much of that was from the selling of lottery ticket for many of the lovely prizes so generously donated from local businesses. Everyone is mentioned in out Thank You section. February ’07 and October ’07, we were in town with our freshly baked pies and cakes which combined raised over 3,000 Euro!! In March ’08 for carnival we raised 1,200 euro and we proudly came 2nd in the competition for our super costumes! Well done to all the ladies who continue to bake for the animals every time we call on them. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WOULD LIKE TO HELP THE ANIMALS BY BAKING SOMETHING PLEASE CALL US ON 6955 582372 AND LET US KNOW WHO YOU ARE!! IT WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE. If anyone has any ideas or is willing to help in any form of fundraising please let us know. We need help, extra people and new energy to continue this community effort. We would love to hear from the local schools, musical or dance societies, anyone with an idea to raise money to help the animals.

WORKING TO CREATE A BETTER FUTURE
One of our main objectives for the last three years is working together with the Town Hall, laying the foundations of permanent future relationship that will help the animals and the residents. It is not enough to continue as we have because we are very tired and overloaded with the weight of continually having to raise money as well as running every day to take care of the street animals. What we need is government funding, a shelter, workers and a vehicle. With these four things we can continue on doing a huge amount of good for the island. The vehicle has become essential as everyone volunteering for M.A.W. has constantly had injured and sick animals in their family cars. It is with great pleasure and relief that we can announce that Barbara Mapelli Mozzi a wonderful lady from Italy has donated 2,600 Euro for us to buy a second hand car. Thank you so much Barbara!! A very special thanks also to Vesna Jones and all the supporters of Greek Animal Rescue for their donation of 1,000 Euro which is needed for taxes, insurance and having our logo put on the car. This is the second time she has kindly come to our aid. Land was impossible to find from the Town Hall for a shelter so Ms. Andriani Theohari has very generously stepped forward to allow us to build a few small pens on her land. Plans for this are underway with the promised help from the Town Hall to help with building costs. This is surely going to take time so PLEASE volunteer to foster a dog. Also underway, voted by Town hall counsel in August 2007 is a finance programme of 15,000 euro a year between the Town Hall and the vet to help towards sterilizations and operations. We are thrilled with this breakthrough decision, which is a huge step forward for Mykonos and a good example for the rest of Greece, although we have still yet to see it in action. We have been informed that the paperwork is delayed in Syros. Our small monthly income ended in September 2007 and we have been struggling to get through the winter months with no financial help at all - our expenses have totaled 10,000 euro. We thank the town hall for providing food for the winter program on 3 separate occasions and for the printing expenses of leaflets and distributing the newsletter. Through constant negotiation and contact with Nikos Salakas at the Town Hall we hope to see this programme begin very soon. We thank him once again for his persistence and work on this programme. WE HOPE TO MAKE LONG TERM CHANGES WITH CONSTANT SUPPORT FROM THE TOWN HALL AND GOVERNMENT.

Is your dog micro chipped ?
Most dogs we find are not micro chipped unfortunately, because if they were, we could find the owner immediately. Every dog we find is checked for a micro chip. Without a chip, we spend a lot of time taking photographs and putting up posters around the island to try to find who has lost their dog. Sometimes weeks or even months later we will find the owner. Greek law since 2003 makes it compulsory to microchip your dog. It costs around 40 Euro. It is a tiny electronic microchip that sits justs under the skin surface and has a code number with the dogs and its owner’s personal information that is stored in a databank in Athens. A quick visit to the vet, could save your dog and us a lot of work and worry.
ABANDONING AND POISONING ARE BOTH ILLEGAL ACTS PUNISHABLE BY LAW 3710/2003.
To abandon an animal as many people still do IS ILLEGAL. To poison any animal as many people still do IS ILLEGAL. The number of times we find small puppies or day old kittens alive in plastic bags and dumped in the garbage is shocking! Tiny little babies left to starve or be burnt alive at the dump. Or five or six cats together lying dead in the street after suffering a horrendous slow death due to poisoning. OWNING AN ANIMAL IS A COMMITMENT THAT SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. ANIMALS LIKE HUMANS HAVE FEELINGS. THEY GET COLD, HUNGRY, HURT AND SUFFER.
There are many animals living here in Mykonos that are privately owned that are living in terrible conditions. Dogs that never are left off their short chains or ever shown any affection in their lives. They never receive medical attention or a good diet. They are not in a cool place in the summer or a warm Call the vets today! place in the winter. They basically hardly exist in the eyes of the owner. This also applies to the many goats, donkeys, sheep, cows and horses that are living in Mykonos. Most of the goats, sheep and many of the cows and donkeys have their legs tied together their whole life! We see them struggling in 35 degree heat to walk and find shade. Tourists are horrified and cry, the Mykonians just laugh and tell us that the animals “are used to it”. As an animal welfare society we have received many e-mails, faxes and letters from tourists who would NEVER visit this island again simply because of the shocking animal abuse they have witnessed. Many came on holiday and ended up spending two weeks feeding skinny dogs on chains and tiny kittens found in the garbage. People calling us begging us to find a way to take the animal’s home with them to SAVE THEM. Many have been able to take them home to Germany or Switzerland or Austria but most are not that lucky. One of the biggest problems for us is changing the basic mentality of people in how they see animals but this is something that will take generations to slowly change. Teach your children respect for all living creatures and for the environment, the world and people in general. Without respect we are more animalistic than the animals themselves. FACT: ONE FEMALE DOG AND HER OFFSPRING IN 6 YEARS CAN PRODUCE 67,000 PUPPIES. PUPPIES ARE CONTINUOUSLY DUMPED... BE RESPONSIBLE & STERILIZE YOUR DOG TODAY!
FARMERS AND DOG OWNERS NEAR FARMING AREAS Owners must be responsible for their dogs if they live near livestock however if a dog is being a nuisance then the farmer MUST contact the owner, or M.A.W and the police before taking the matter into their own hands and harming somebody’s pet. Under Greek law all animals are to be protected and it is illegal to harm any living animal.

HELP AND HOPE FROM OUTSIDE MYKONOS
It is not often that someone can come into your life and give you hope. For us this lady did exactly that... In September 2007 Barbara Mapelli Mozzi of Switzerland flew to Athens to meet with Kostas Keramidas, a Vet who runs a surgery in Mykonos, to arrange the sterilization of 100 Mykonian cats. During her first visit to Mykonos in August 2007, she met with another concerned tourist also staying at the Mykonos Grand, Monique Pettiford and they were both deeply saddened at the over population of cats on our island with no home or care for their well being. They spoke with the owners of the Mykonos Grand, who have agreed to be one of the first hotels to participate in a sterilization program. It was a very busy August morning when Sharon was running like a maniac for her arrivals and departures in her hotel when the phone rang. “We must meet because the animal problem must be addressed immediately!” a strong voice announced. Sharon smiled, as anyone who is that outspoken for the animals is Ok in her book! Monique arranged the first meeting which connected Barbara with Sharon and Sarah. We were both surprised and very happy when we received a call in October from Barbara, who works with animals in Switzerland, saying that she had raised a large amount money to help OUR cats, was taking time away from her busy life to come and participate and that the whole event had already been arranged. A Greek acquaintance, Mr. Konstantinos MelasKyriazi who resides in Geneva generously donated more than 3,000 euro. Barbara also had other very kind donations from friends and associates that have never even been to Mykonos. We provided somewhere for them to stay, assisted them with baskets and helped them with the most troubled areas (of which there are many) but the whole project manifested because of the work, time and money from Barbara Mapelli Mozzi. The work took place November 26th until November 30th. 98 cats were sterilized and 14 sick cats were treated with medicine and love from Monique! It was a large scale operation with many helpers involved to transport and care for the safety and well being of the cats. The areas that were worked in mostly were, Paranga, Platy Yialos, Ano Mera, Mykonos town cemetery and a few individual cats from other areas such as the airport. The stray cats are protected by Greek law 3170/2003 and by the Town Hall of Mykonos in affiliation with the Mykonos Animal Welfare, the ears have been clipped slightly to identify them and to prevent them being operated on again. These cats will not reproduce any babies. Sterilization is a safe and responsible way to control the population of cats on Mykonos so that all life is long and respected. For more information on sterilization, please contact a vet or speak with us. The ladies and M.A.W met with the Mayor to receive a personal thank you and gifts from Mykonos. We thank these ladies immensely who are visitors to our beautiful island and they had only one request “that residents of Mykonos respect the life that lives here on this beautiful island and to also help in taking responsible action to making the lives of the animals less miserable. There should be no room for suffering on Mykonos”. Last month, April 2008, we were desperate to find funds for a second hand car and Sarah suggested asking Barbara for some of the unspent donations she had raised for more sterilizations, which we could find the money for at a later date. Barbara replied by saying that after some serious thought, SHE personally would finance the car and sent us 2,600 euro. We truly have never met anyone so generous. The greatest respect and thanks to Barbara Mapelli Mozzi.

HAPPY TAILS! by Barbara Hehne
KORITSAKI was dumped at Agios Sostis and for a long time nobody could get close to her, obviously she must have been treated real badly when she was a puppy. She was about 5 months old, when she decided to adopt herself to the nearby bungalows “Mykonos Star”. Even though everybody treated her in a friendly manner, she could not be touched. Somehow Koritzaki, got friendly with my dogs as I was taking them for walks in that area and eventually also with me. As I didn’t want her to get pregnant, M.A.W paid for her sterilization. Every day she waited for us to join our walk and a bowl of crackers and apart from stealing Nike sneakers, phones and towels from tourists on the beach, life was going smoothly.... Unfortunately Koritzaki had the bad habit of chasing cars and one day she got badly hit, but thankfully suffered no severe injuries that antibiotics couldn’t cure. The summer passed and soon the time would come when the “Mykonos Star” would close down for the season and I was going to Germany. Then what? So I sent her pictures to a friend of mine in Berlin, who agreed immediately to find a home for her. Within 2 weeks the Family Much (3 generations), who live in Geranienburg on a farm, decided to give Koritzaki, now called Karmi, a new life. The kids are crazy about her and even grandmother loves her. She sleeps inside the house, runs around on their land as much as she likes and once a day the family goes for a walk with her or daddy takes her for a ride with his bicycle. Who would have thought a year earlier, that this totally terrified little doggy could be the centre blessing of so many people! BEAR was taken in by M.A.W in June 2007. The Pharmacy in Ano Mera had informed us that there was a big black dog killing all the cats. When we went there, we found the “monster” fast asleep on the terrace of the pharmacy. According to eye-witnesses he was already living on the streets for about 3 months, seen at the local school or where ever he didn’t get kicked away. As a long term foster place was not available for him, Bear spent one month on the balcony of our office, playing “daddy” for a few puppies which were also waiting for new homes. The puppies left, but big Bear remained, even though his picture was placed onto our webside and at Pet shops. As summer showed its hottest face, it was simply getting unbearable for him on the terrace, so I evacuated him to Nico Janakopoulos, where he spent the next 7/8 months on a long chain. I went to see him almost every day, trying to keep up his spirits. Than I finally got the magic news from Germany - he had been chosen to have a worthy life with somebody who loves him. Now Bear spends his lazy days on the sofa of Mrs. Breuer or when the sun comes out, in the big garden with 2 female dogs in the hills of the Eifel. He isn’t housetrained yet, but Mrs. Breuer doesn’t mind - the day will come...

LIZA was found tied up at the pharmacy in Ano Mera on 14th October 2007, during the first cold and rainy night of the autumn. Attached to her collar was a note, carefully wrapped up in foil, saying: “They call me Liza. I am a good girl. Please keep me. Do not do anything bad to me”. What an irony. The first bad thing was already done! She must have been treated with love and care though, as she was very happy, intelligent and innocent. The 5 month old pup was well fed and had very shiny hair. In order to find a home, Liza spent 2 weeks at the “Pet-stop” during the day (thanks to Dimitris and Eleftaria for agreeing to help) She broke a few hearts, but nobody was willing to take her in. I did all the necessary vaccinations and tried desperately to find her a good home. After a few disappointments, 72 hours before my departure for Germany, some friends were interested in adopting Liza. We left for Munich at the end of November and she found a loving home with Oliver and Simone Mann. They lives outside Munich in a big house, surrounding forest, with 2 Children (6+10) - the kids stop fighting with one another, when Liza sneaks in the middle of them turning a battle into a playful game. Than came her first Christmas, let’s have fun - she thought that the decorations on the Christmas tree were for her to play with... Now she even goes on vacation with the family. Liza became the third child they always wanted. PLUTO, a beautiful male cat, who lived at one of my feeding stations, got hit by a car or motorbike. I took him to Vet Nikos Triantafillou,x-rays were taken and Nikos diagnosed a light fracture at the hipbone. An operation wasn’t necessary, so I kept him in a dog box for recovery. After a few days I realized that Pluto had severe breathing problems. I took him back to Nikos and did more x-rays, which released a bleak picture. He had 2 holes in his lungs, one the size of a 2 Euro coin and the intestines had moved up under his rip bones. The Vet predicted a 50% chance of survival from a very difficult operation. I saw that Pluto was a fighter and by then I got rather fond of him. Money is always a vital issue for Mykonos animal Welfare but I promised to adopt him and not put in back on the street so we went ahead with the operation. And what an operation! His heart stopped twice for 10 minutes and Only because of the outstanding skill of N.Triantafillou and the assistance from Joanna, Pluto survived and recovered quickly. In the meantime another probleme appeared. His tail, thick and bushy, was covered with gangrene. Being still weak from his first operation, we waited for a couple of weeks in order to amputate the tail. But nothing can ruin the looks of Pluto and although he is still limping, he is the king of my castle. I have 18 cats now, but none of them would dare to fool around with him! Pluto is one lucky cat and definately lives up to having 9 lives!

More Happily housed doggies
Pat and Matilda were adopted last year by Stavros and Heidi who own a house in Mykonos but live only part time here. Heidi was not happy with the way they were being look after when she was not around, so she flew over from USA and took Jack and Lulu (as they are now called) to live with her other 5 dogs in New Mexico, USA. They were found abandoned together in 2006 and we are so happy that they will still share their lives together, with a good family. Remember to contact us first, if you want a dog. Don’t breed or buy whilst street animals die!
We are very happy that we have managed, (at our own time, energy and expense) to house many dogs in the past year, however we would like to make it very clear that ABANDONING is against the law and Mykonos Animal Welfare will prosecute offenders. It is not our duty to re-house YOUR dog; if you are unable to care for your animal then you must put posters in pet shops and ask your friends to find a home for your dog. It is NOT acceptable to leave your dog on the streets of Mykonos.
Pedigree’s lost or abandoned
TWO pedigree Pekinese dogs were found this winter. Many people think that pure bred animals are never abandoned on the street. This is NOT true. Maybe some are lost but unless they are micro-chipped it can be impossible to reunite them with their owners. Both have been swiftly adopted into very nice homes here in Mykonos. Mandy the Maltese was found by Serena Candiani in an abandoned old house near Panormos in August 2007. She was shaking with fear and shock. We are unsure what caused her leg injury but she was swiftly adopted by some tourists here in Mykonos and now lives in Dusseldorf, Germany.

SCOOBY DOO - Was living on the beach in Ag Sostis most of the summer 2007. Fiona, An English lady who lives in Mykonos during the summer, took photos of him and put posters around trying to find him a home. Nobodytook notice our our pleas and he went back to the beach, as no foster home was available. Then he disappeared for a few days and on his return had horrifying wounds on his feet. Vassilis Stichios, from Ag Sostis Taverna took him to the vet when it was thought he had been tied to the back of a moving car and the skin on his paws were ripped off. Vassilis and the staff at Sostis kindly cared for him until we were able to find him a permanent home. He now lives near Frankfurt and is now very at home, as you see in this photo. At 92 cm tall, he is the biggest gentle dog we have housed.
One of abandoned Lolita’s puppies went with this lovely Dutch lady to Holland. A frequent visitor to Greece, and understanding the problems we face, she kindly adopted this needy pup.
NOT SUCH A HAPPY ENDING...
DEAD DOLPHIN AT THE DUMP
T.A.Z ,the wild animals section of Mykonos animal welfare is absolutely horrified at the discovery of a dead dolphin at the main refuge dump. This is beyond unacceptable and we ask is this people’s example of humanity? After investigation and communication with other institutes, the conclusion was that somebody was keeping this dolphin as their pet. E.U regulations seriously condemns illegal possession of any wild animal, ill treatment or pointless gunfire and we would like to notify the public that in the event of proof of such a case, we will take the necessary legal action according to European law with the support of International Organizations for the protection of animals that we collaborate with.
I treated this tortured girl with antibiotics and cortison when she appeared at one of my feeding stations. Her tail had been cut off and the hair at her feet must have been burnt off. Cancer was eating her nose and mouth away and sadly she was beyond cure and had to put to sleep.
A once beautiful dog shamefully thrown at the main garbage dump as its final resting place. Photo taken by Serena Candiani Nov ’07.

WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT (T.A.Z)
In January 2008, the department of wild animals, T.A.Z. was formed as part of the Mykonos Animal Welfare. Its purpose is the capture and rescue of all the wild animals including birds, reptiles and sea life. Always in cooperation with the correct organizations both here in Mykonos and elsewhere. It works with specific people chosen for this purpose who have experience and enjoy this difficult work. For further information or help please call 6955 582374. The OHIA (VIPERA AMMODYTES) is the ONLY venomous snake that exists on Mykonos. It is a very shy snake and does not like human contact. The length of the animal ranges from 65-90cm including the tail. It is the only snake in Eastern Europe that has an overhang on the muzzle. Exceptional formation of the dorsal side of the body with a dark line forming a zig zag. It has distinct facial features. The male is grey and the female brown. The VIPERA AMMODYTES like all of our ten other reptiles species is protected by the Berne Convention and Directive 92/43/EU. DO NOT KILL THEM! If you find a snake and need help, please call us. The most common snake that is killed is the Lafitis (Elaphe quatuorlineata), shown in the below photo. T.A.Z. recently rescued and set one free. The Lafitis are a key link for the island ecosystem by controlling the population of rodents (mice and rats). They are harmless to humans. Hedgehogs are a friendly nocturnal delight to have around. Make an area in your yard that is full of leaves, cut grass, general garden debris that they love to live in. This will help prevent them getting squashed on the roads, as they so frequently are.

A special thank you to DJ Nikos, DJ Hans, Massimo and Maria of “La Roticceria” for arranging and hosting a party at the restaurant without asking the committee members to do any work!!!!! thank you!!!! A fantastic 1000 euros was raised for the animals. It was the first BIG event not organized by us and hope you also could arrange a fundraiser for the animals.
SHOP OWNERS
If you close down your store and have new goods that are unreturnable to the supplier, why not donate them to us and get a tax benefit. We are a legal charity which gives a reciept for recieved donations which can then be given to your accountant to deduct from your taxes.
HONOURABLE PATRON Geraldine Kenway for her donation of 10,000 euro

2 DOGS URGENTLY NEEDING A HOME
COLIN, male mixed collie about 3 years old.
COCO, female, VERY easy going, trained and answers to commands, about 4 years old.
Remember the car dog story when we found 5 dogs in appalling conditions living in a car in Ano Mera? This is foxy lady, now named Micra with her new family in Belgium. She is still terrified of strangers but with her loving family she is relaxed.
THANK YOU to Mr. VILAPLAGAS for donating all his stock of shoes when closing down his show store. We held a show sale in May 2008 and raised 1800 euro!!
Thank you to Serena Candiani who had a clothes sale at her house in August 2007

This is a female dog was drowned with a thick rope tied around her body and probably a big rock on the other side of the rope. She obviously was pregnant as she already had developed milk for her unborn puppies.
