							Accident and Emergency Department

8.9 The Royal London Hospital Accident and Emergency (A&E)
Department carried out a one week audit of alcohol related
presentations to the accident and emergency department from
5th to 11th May 2006. The data gathered during this audit
showed that a large proportion of A&E presentations were
alcohol related. Furthermore for particular categories of
presentations such as psychiatric, deliberate self harm (which
includes intoxication) and injuries sustained from assaults, the
                        majority were alcohol related.

Ambulance data

8.10 Data on alcohol-related ambulance call outs from the 1st January
2006 to 31st January 2007 was supplied by London Ambulance
Service. There were a total of 1186 call outs coded as alcohol
related during that time; nearly three quarters (74%) were to
males. Alcohol-related callouts represent approximately 3% of
all callouts, however this may be an under representation due to
                        data reporting problems.

8.11 Call outs increased at the weekend, peaking on Saturdays.
