Bishops and Sisters Servants gather for jubille celebration
On a glorious day in March, Satur-
day the 10th — being neither winter
nor spring in the air — Sisters Ser-
vants of Mary Immaculate gathered at
their motherhouse, St. Mary’s Villa in
Sloatsburg, to honor their Superior
General, Sister Janice Soluk, SSMI.
   Sister Janice had arrived from
Rome to give the keynote address at
the Archeparchial Women’s Day in
Philadelphia, which was scheduled to
be held on March 17. Seeing this as a
“golden opportunity,” plans were
made to honor Sister Janice on her
golden jubilee — celebrating her 50
years of religious life as a Sister Ser-
vant of Mary Immaculate.
Sister Janice, a member of the
Canadian province of Christ the King,
was joined by Sister Charlotte Pipping
and Sister Barbara Stefaniak from the
American Province of the Immaculate
Conception in celebrating their
Golden Jubilees. Fifty years ago,
when the American and Canadian
provinces were one province, they
shared novitiate life together in An-
caster, Canada. All were mindful
throughout the day of their fellow
Canadian jubilarian, Sister Eugenia
Stefaniuk, who was not able to join the
three-some for the celebration.
The day of celebration began with
a Divine Liturgy of Thanksgiving con-
celebrated by Most Rev. Paul Chom-
nycky, OSBM, Eparch of Stamford;
Most Rev. John Bura, Auxiliary
Bishop of Philadelphia; Most Rev.

SACRED HEART CHURCH AMONG NYʼS ARCHITECTURAL GEMS
Johnson City’s Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church is one of the
buildings in photographer Andy Olenick’s book "Historic New York: Archi-
tectural Journeys in the Empire State." ¶ Richard Reisem wrote the text
that accompanies Olenick's more than 300 photographs in the book,
which takes readers on a visual tour of some of the state's most fasci-
nating buildings. ¶ "Historic New York" developed out of a partnership be-
tween its publisher, the Rochester-based Landmark Society of Western
New York, and the Preservation League of New York State. The groups
wanted a single volume that would celebrate the architecture of the whole
state. ¶ The book takes a region-by-region approach to the material.
Among the buildings included are some famous ones, New York City's
Chrysler Building and Rochester's George Eastman House, for example,
and some not so famous ones, like the Oswego County Courthouse and
the Flower Memorial Library in Watertown, and the Chemung County
Courthouse and Mark Twain's Study, both in Elmira. [“Historic New York,”
