Mission
The mission of the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences (SACS) is to develop and maintain quality instructional,
research, and service programs. These programs focus on the veterinary and comparative aspects of the specialties of cardiology,
dermatology, diagnostic imaging, general medicine, internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, oncology, ophthalmology,
pulmonary medicine, surgery and zoological medicine. Department faculty also staff the Veterinary Medical Teaching
Hospital’s small animal, equine, and food animal clinics with primary emphasis being placed on companion animal, wildlife and
        exotic species.

In conjunction with the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, the department offers masters’ and doctoral graduate
programs. The department also offers residencies in the specialties of cardiology, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology,
ophthalmology, radiology, surgery and zoological medicine.

Department faculty participate in all three phases of the professional veterinary curriculum with an extensive commitment to the
clinical teaching phase. An additional instructional thrust of department faculty and residents involves their commitment to
continuing education on a local, state, national, and international level.

Scholarly efforts are focused on the expansion of knowledge in both the basic and clinical sciences. Results of these studies are
published in peer reviewed journals and presented at scientific meetings. Research support comes from private, corporate,
foundation, and government agencies. Special areas of research emphasis include: comparative and veterinary ophthalmology,
comparative orthopedics, dermatology, feline population control, gastroenterology and nutrition, veterinary sports medicine, and
        wildlife and exotic animal diseases.

SACS faculty have a close relationship with faculty in a number of the colleges on campus as well as with faculty in the Health
Science Center. This has allowed for extensive collaboration in research programs, clinical rounds and seminars, and in the
development of high quality residency training programs.

Departmental Issues
Ongoing issues include faculty retention and recruitment and salary compression. The college’s ongoing inability to address
salary needs for promotion and reclassification of technical and other support staff is another serious and parallel problem.

Salary compression has resulted in the loss of faculty to specialty practices which offer more competitive salaries, better hours
and less bureaucracy. During the past year we lost Drs. Graham and Miyabayashi to specialty practices.

A major goal of the department continues to be the development of a separate oncology service. Lack of adequate facilities
however, especially an on-site linear accelerator, has hampered recruitment.

Research
Department research again took a back seat to teaching and patient care in 2003. Our number of papers published in refereed
journals declined as hospital commitments took up increasing amounts of faculty time. The number of grants increased however,
and with the increased number of new faculty we hope for a turn around in 2004.

We graduated two students with Ph.D. degrees and one student with a Master’s degree during the past year. Eleven students are
currently enrolled for graduate degrees under SACS faculty supervision.

UF College of Veterinary Medicine 2003

Teaching
Our faculty continues to be heavily involved in teaching all three phases of the curriculum. In Phase 1, faculty teach basic
science courses and oversee aspects of professional development, in Phase 2, faculty teach all the small animal didactic clinical
courses, and in Phase 3, teach in all the small animal and zoological clerkships and in the didactic electives. The radiology,
ophthalmology and dermatology services provide diagnostic services and patient care in both the large and small animal
          hospitals.

Patient care remains an important part of our instructional activities, and all patients seen in the VMTH are incorporated into
          student education.

Faculty continue to be concerned about the lack of practical preparation of our incoming third-year students for the clinical
rotations, especially in basic animal handling, physical diagnostic skills and nursing skills.

During the past year we developed new clerkships in shelter medicine, cardiology and behavior. An elective clerkship in
emergency medicine is also being developed in conjunction with Florida Veterinary Specialists in Tampa. A new business
course was added to the curriculum for junior students.

Service
Faculty are also regularly invited to speak at continuing education programs for veterinarians both in this country and overseas.

Operation Catnip, a program to spay and neuter feral cats, completed another successful year. Organized by Dr. Julie Levy and
run by more than 300 volunteers, the program neutered more than 1,500 cats during the past year, and 2003 was a landmark year
in that the program has now sterilized more than 10,000 cats!

This year also saw the completion of the seventh full year of the Visiting Practitioner program. The number of participants
remains steady, and the program has provided an additional and much needed source of revenue to the services. Feedback from
          participants has been very positive.

The department also continues to welcome clinicians, scholars and students from around the world. We had a total of 18 official
visitors to the department during the past year from all over the United States and overseas (Australia, England, France, Israel,
Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland).

Critical Issues for 2004
Major issues include recruitment to our three open lines (ophthalmology, orthopedics and medicine), faculty development and
retention, and development of an oncology program. We are also improving VMTH efficiency.

Changes in Faculty
During 2003, we bid farewell to Dr. Paul Cardeilhac (Emeritus status), Mr. Wayne McClellan, and Ms. Mae Chisholm who
retired. Dr. Terry Curtis joined us as a clinical behaviorist; Dr. Amara Estrada joined us as a clinical assistant professor in small
animal medicine; Dr. Natalie Isaza joined us as a clinical assistant professor in shelter medicine; Dr. Ramiro Isaza joined us as
an assistant professor in zoological medicine, and Dr. Ursula Krotscheck as a lecturer in small animal surgery.

Small Animal Hospital
We produced and distributed a referring veterinarian handbook and developed a system that allowed referring veterinarians to
provide feedback on every case. The radiosurgery program at the McKnight Brain Institute continued to gather strength and
        momentum during the year.

Dr. Nikki Hackendal joined us as the emergency triage clinician in August. In this position, she handles most daytime

UF College of Veterinary Medicine 2003

the clinical services and has resulted in shorter client waiting times.
