					                         Technology Integration Newsletter #7
                                     Lesson Plan Overviews

This newsletter has 3 sections.

    Lesson Plan Overviews for grades K4 – 8 (only 2 pages!!!)

 Suggestions for teachers whose students have done these “core skills”
projects in the past (actually the ideas are relevant for 1st time users as well)

 Steps for using “Read Only” Documents to simplify saving in grades K-2:
       1) Create a file, then make it a “read only” file as follows:
           1. open a blank word document, then save in “My Documents”
           2. exit the file, then open “My Documents”,
           3. right click on the file name, then go down to “Properties”
                       - click in the “Read Only” box

       2) Place this file in the location that you would like students to save

       3) Have students open the file from the specific location, then

       4) Have students use “save as” to rename the file, then

       5) Save the file in that same location.

       * NOTE * this process is only useful if your students are able to access files and save
to a shared drive. If that is NOT your situation, then have students click on the “X”
in the upper left hand corner to initiate the saving process OR teach them to click on
the picture of the “black disk”
K4 & K5 Objectives:
 This week introduce the “Math” section within Feed Freddy. To get to this game ask
students to “go in to “Feed Freddy” – but don’t feed him anything”. Cllick on the word
“Math” which is just above the triangle. Encourage students to explore within Math.

Daily Lesson:
1) Demonstrate the steps required to enter the “Math” section. Demonstrate several sections
including: “How Many”, “Matching”, & “Patterns”. Try them all yourself to determine the best
ones to demonstrate to students.
2) Goodnight Moon: 5 of each color
3) Teletubbies
4) If – and only if – students work quietly today they may proceed to Feed Freddy for the last 5
minutes of class – DO NOT LET THEM USE Feed Freddy very often!
……………………………………………………………

Optional Web Site For Grades 3-8:
This week I started class by having all students in grades 3-8 spend some time looking at
Pictures of Animals on the National Geographic Site: http://animals.nationalgeographic.com.
 You may want to preview this site ahead of time to make sure everything works. At the
school I am teaching at today the video doesn’t work very well.
 I require that my students read the first paragraph of the Bio of 3 animals
 I require my students to select 3 animals they have never seen previously
 A Teacher Requested that I modify this project as follows: 1) Focus on just 1 animal, 2)
Identify the Habitat & Ecosystem, 3) List some interesting facts, & 4) Include pictures.
.……………………………………………………………………

                                  Core Skills Projects
Extra skills & Curriculum Integration Ideas
Since most of my students have done these projects in the past I do some things to keep the
projects more interesting. You may wish to try any or all of the following – even for projects
you have already “completed”.

For Skill Lessons 1-3 & ABC in Word:
 Have Students Change Color, Text & Size (they love it!!!)
 Have accelerated students add their own word list
 Ask faster students to re-type the alphabet – backwards!!!

For “About Me”:
 Add thumbnail size pictures to each sentence:
o Picture-Format Layout: “In Line with Text”
 Add picture of the school in the Heading Area:
o Picture-Format Layout: “In Front of Text”
 Add picture of student: Thumbnail or Heading
 Ask students to write their own “1st two paragraphs” instead of using template

For “Internet Core with Word”
        Use Prehistoric Animals
        Use Fish only
 Use a topic from classroom teachers instead of animals
 Fit all 26 animals on 1 page with mini-labels

For “Internet Core with PowerPoint”
 Have students select just 1 animal and research specific information such as 1)
Habitat, 2) Size, 3) What They Eat, 4) Interesting Facts
 K-2: Animals of a farm in Your State
        3-5: State Symbols
        6-8: Curriculum Area Biographical
 Use the project as a “Check Test” that is graded
