TRUSO - FROM EXCAVATION TO THE OPEN AIR MUSEUM Similarly to the Mediterranean Sea in the Antiquity - the Baltic Sea in the Early Middle Ages integrated the communities living at its coastline. Between the 8th and 11th centuries the Baltic Sea was the main route of the contacts and trade exchange for the Scandinavians, Frisians, Germans, Balts, Finns and Slavs. There were many sea expeditions at that time. The exceptional one, because of its noncommercial goal, was that of Wulfstan, an envoy of King Alfred the Great. He travelled by sea around 890 between Danish Haede (Hedeby, Haithabu) and Truso, a port on the Pruthenian coast at the Vistula River mouth.

The magneto-metric and geo-radar investigation were executed on the whole area of Truso in 2005. The result of these examinations and excavations, that are made in the selected parts of the settlement, enabled to determine with precision the settlement range, indicate the concentration places of objects and relics
These examinations were done with co-operation with the scientists of the Institut für Ur- und Frühgeschichte und Archäologie des Mittelalters Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg).

Archaeological exhibition - Gothic History
• Gothic History • According to the newest establishments the Goths came to the southern Baltic Coast, also in the region of the Vistula Mouth, in the beginning of our Era. Their initial settlements had been most probably located on the Baltic islands (Gothland), as well as in the southern areas of Sweden (provinces: Östergötland i Västergötland). Coming of the Goth to the southern Baltic coast was the beginning of the new culture in Pomerania – the Wielbark Culture. The exhibition “Gothic History” gives a closer view to the Gothic history, development and transformations which are best visible in the material culture, in particular in the trimming accessories. It is worth mentioning now that, unfortunately, our knowledge about the Gothic everyday life is still limited to a large extent. The reason is that the Gothic burial grounds are better examined than settlements.

Archaeological exhibition - Truso – Seaside Emporium
Wulfstan visited that emporium 1000 years ago. The first attempt to locate TRUSO was made nearly 400 years ago (Richard Hakluyt, 1598). Discovery of Truso in 1982 and excavation works, carried out within this settlement, disclosed many mysteries and secrets related to its foundation, development and fall – this is the main theme of exhibitions.

Archaeological exhibition - Elbląg – a recovered testimony of the past The Exhibition is an attempt to show the old, not discovered yet, Elbląg, its residents’ everyday life looking at it through the prism of the objects they used. The exhibition shows about four thousands of diverse relics that are made of different raw materials: clay, leather, glass, wood, metals, amber, horn, bones. Most exhibits are presented in the arranged interiors. Among other things a fragment of medieval kitchen together with its hearth has been restored. The interior of an Elbląg burgher tenement house with restored fireplace and rich tableware is also exhibited.
