Chap. 30 – 33: The Book of Consolation

God had threatened Judah with judgment for her
  disobedience
                                                                Judgment
But Judah had stubbornly refused to mend her ways
                                                                is Coming
The stage was therefore set for the promised judgment
to come, through destruction and exile by the
  Babylonians
But before this sad scene of suffering started to unfold,
Jeremiah inserted “The Book of Consolation”, as
                                                                  but…
chapters 30-33 have come to be called
                                                               There is Hope
These chapters are a collection of prophecies that for the Future…
  offered hope in desperate times
The prophesies looked beyond Judah’s imminent
collapse and pointed to a new age when Israel and
  Judah would be:
      returned to their land,
      reunited as a nation and
      restored to their God
                                                              …in Return and
                                                               Restoration

                                                                                Page: 3
The Book of Consolation: Key Prophecies

God will bring both Israel (northern Israel
                                                                     Judah
  kingdom) and Judah (southern kingdom)
back from captivity and restore them to Return
the land he gave their forefathers (30:3)
“At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be Promised
the God of all the clans of Israel, and they Land
  will be my people.” (31:1)

The city of Jerusalem will be
  rebuilt (30:18; 31:38) and
  “never again be uprooted or
  demolished” (31:40)

God will make a new covenant with the
house of Israel and with the house of Judah New Covenant
  (31:31)
                                                                              Page: 4
The Book of Consolation: Key Prophecies (cont’d)

It will be a time of unprecedented peace,
prosperity and righteousness in the land
     Health and healing (33:6) Peace
     Abundant peace, prosperity and security;
     restoration of fortunes (33:6, 9, 11)
Cleansing from sin, forgiveness of sins
     (33:8)
Sounds of joy and gladness, thanksgiving
     to the Lord (33:11) Prosperity
A righteous King from the line of David
will reign wisely over the reunited
     kingdom of Israel and Judah (33:15-16;
     23:5-6)
This period is often referred to as the
     “Messianic Age”

                                        Joy, Gladness,

The New Covenant (31:31-34)

31:31 "The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I
will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with
the house of Judah.
31:32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their
forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out
of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a New Covenant
husband to them, “ declares the LORD.
31:33 "This is the covenant I will make with the house of
Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my
law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their

God, and they will be my people.
                                                                    Inward understanding of

remember their sins no more." Forgiveness of sins

The Messianic Age

In addition to Jer 31:1-40 and 33:1-26,
there are other scripture references to
  this time of unprecedented peace,
  prosperity and righteousness

  For example, Isaiah 11:6-9
11:6 The wolf will live with the lamb, the
leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf
and the lion and the yearling together; and a
     little child will lead them.
11:7 The cow will feed with the bear, their
young will lie down together, and the lion will
     eat straw like the ox.
                                                       Isaiah 65:20

  Isaiah 2:2-4
2:2 In the last days the mountain of the LORD's
temple will be established as chief among the
mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all
     nations will stream to it.
2:3 Many peoples will come and say, "Come, let us
go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of
the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that
we may walk in his paths.“ The law will go out from
Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
2:4 He will judge between the nations and will settle
disputes for many peoples. They will beat their
swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning
hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war anymore.

 Dispensational Viewpoint: Christian Zionism

Christian Zionists are people who hold the Dispensational viewpoint and believe
that the formation of political Israel on 14 May 1948 is in fulfillment of numerous
prophecies in the Bible on the re-gathering of Israel in the end times, e.g.
           Isaiah: 11:11-12; 43:5-7; 61:4; Ezekiel: 34:11-16; 36:24; 37; Amos 9:15
           Jeremiah: 16:14-16; 23:5-8; 30:8-11; 31: 7-9, 15-17; 32:37-44

Isa 11:11-12:
“In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant that is left of his people
from Assyria, from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush, from Elam, from Babylonia, from Hamath
and from the islands of the sea.” “He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he
will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth.”

Amos 9:14-15:
I will bring back my exiled people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will
plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant Israel in their
own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them,“ says the LORD your God.

Above prophecies (and others like them) do not seem to fit the return from
Babylonian captivity in 538 B.C. e.g. they were uprooted again in AD 70. So
      when?

Key Distinctives of the Reformed (Covenant) Theology Viewpoint:
Amillennial view, i.e. do not believe in a literal 1,000 year reign of Christ on earth
Rather, the millennium is symbolic of present life on earth (believers) and present life in
heaven (dead saints), not a literal 1,000 years but a “long period of time”
The Church has replaced Israel as the people of God, so all the prophecies relating to Israel
will now be fulfilled by the Church (as the spiritual Israel)
Israel therefore has no special place in God’s end-time agenda and there is no biblical
significance in the formation of political Israel in 1948; the interpretations of prophecies that
Dispensationalists apply to re-gathering of Israel can be refuted.

The Two Viewpoints: Summing Up

Dispensational Viewpoint Reformed (Covenant) Theology Viewpoint

  Bible interpretation of the Bible
“Israel” always means only the literal, “Israel” may mean either literal, physical
physical descendants of Jacob. descendants of Jacob or the figurative,
                                               spiritual Israel, depending on context.
God has 2 peoples with 2 separate God has always had only 1 people, the
destinies: Israel and the Church. Church gradually developed.
All O.T. prophecies for “Israel” are for Some O.T. prophecies are for literal Israel,
literal Israel, not the Church. others are for spiritual Israel.
The Millennium will fulfill the Covenant Christ fulfilled the Covenant to Abraham.
to Abraham. Israel has a future. Some Covenanters believe in a future for
                                               literal Israel, most don't.
Dispensationalists are always Pre- Covenanters are usually Amillennial,
Millennial (2nd Coming) and usually sometimes Pre-Millennial or Post-Millennial
  Pre-Tribulational (Rapture). (2nd Coming), rarely Pre-Tribulational
                                               (Rapture).

                                                                                              Page: 16
The gulf is wide but does it really matter?

The two views are diametrically opposed at many points – probably not
possible to come up with a hybrid compromise
But there are good, sound, evangelical Christians on both sides!
So should we be concerned? Probably not.
Not an essential matter of salvation
Not an essential matter of daily Christian living
But may matter if Christian Zionists take their beliefs to the political level

                                                                                      Page: 17
The New Covenant for Believers Today

Regardless of which viewpoint we adopt, believers today are under the
  New Covenant
  Dispensational Viewpoint:
The New Covenant was promised to the Jews (Jer 31:31-34) and will be established
      with them in the Millennium
But believers today (whether Jew or Gentile) are experiencing the New Covenant
first though faith in Jesus Christ (Luke 22:20; 1 Cor 11:25)
Same New Covenant in both cases (Heb 8:6-13; 10:15-18; 2 Cor 3:3-6)

  Reformed (Covenant) Theology Viewpoint
The New Covenant of Jer 31:31 and Lk 22:20 are the same and for the Church
      (spiritual Israel)
Believers today (whether Jew or Gentile) are experiencing the New Covenant
      through faith in Jesus Christ

LK 22:20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying,
"This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

Illustrations of Covenant Loyalty and Disloyalty (Ch. 34 & 35)

Covenant Loyalty – The Recabites (Ch. 35)
     During reign of Jehoiakim
Jeremiah instructed by the Lord to invite the Recabite family to a side room of the
temple to give them wine to drink
But the Recabites declined to drink, saying that their forefather Jonadab had
commanded them never to drink wine and they have always obeyed
God used this as an example of covenantal obedience for the people of Judah, who
in contrast have repeatedly disobeyed him
God honored the Recabites by saying to them through Jeremiah: “Jonadab son of
Recab will never fail to have a man to serve me.”
Covenant Disloyalty – People of Judah (Ch. 34:8-22)
An example of Judah’s covenantal disloyalty given here; in the reign of Zedekiah
Under the Mosaic Law: “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you six years.
But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything.” (Ex 21:2)
But the Israelites never obeyed this law
     In Zedekiah’s reign, they made a covenant in the Lord’s temple to free their slaves;
     but afterwards, they changed their minds, took them back and enslaved them again;
God was angry with them and pronounced judgment on them.
