Acquired Brain Injury
Current practice and vision for the future
About the conference
Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is injury to the brain, which can result in complex physical, cognitive, emotional and other psychological disabilities that can change the person’s level of independence, behaviour and personality. Damage to the brain can have a lifelong and devastating effect on the survivor, as well as affecting their families and all those involved in their lives. Following severe brain injury, survivors may have an intricate mix of health and social care requirements, special accommodation needs, vocational and activity needs, financial issues, support and facilitation needs, specialised medical and nursing requirements, psychiatric needs, mental health needs and others. The incidence and complexity of brain injury is increasing, and correspondingly so are the demands on resources which require special planning, design and appropriate delivery. Because of the vulnerability of many survivors of significant brain injury, problems can escalate rapidly, putting them and their families at higher risk of greater need. Managing such situations is at the heart of the government agenda on prevention and care and support reforms. Because of the unique needs of brain injured people, services need to be tailored accordingly. Commissioners and service providers should be aware of this and how they should respond.
Aims of the conference
This conference aims to set out some of the complex and challenging issues that result from acquired brain injury and suggests ways of shaping service provision to accommodate the spectrum of the needs that survivors and those close to them may be faced with. It will do this by: exploring brain injury service development and looking at initiatives that may help to develop services in the future looking at current government directives including the personalisation agenda, safeguarding issues, housing, and aspects of mental capacity and the impact they may have on people with a brain injury and their carers considering the special needs of children and young people with a brain injury demonstrating the important roles of the voluntary and independent sectors in contributing to service provision setting out some solutions to problems that practitioners, commissioners and planners alike face on a day-to-day basis and at a strategic level, thereby closing some of the gaps in the provision of services for this increasing group of vulnerable people.
