. However, if you miss the right op
portunity, your child may resist th
e process more when you try later o
n. So, just how do you know when to
  begin?

First of all _ forget what your mom
told you about having you potty tr
ained by the time you were eighteen
months old. She probably just had
herself trained to sit you on the t
oilet at regular intervals, which i
s not the same as being fully potty
trained. It_s really best not to e
ven think about potty training unti
l your child is two. But, for most
children, the right time will hit s
ometime between the ages of two and
 three.

When your child is ready to begin p
otty training, he will show an inte
rest. He will begin to want to obse
rve your toilet habits and will ask
  questions. Explain that big people
go to the potty instead of using a
diaper. Even if it makes you uncom
fortable, let your child go to the
bathroom with you and watch. If you
have a son, make sure Daddy is tak
ing him to the bathroom with him, t
oo. Daddy will probably resist this
, though I_m not really sure why, s
ince public restrooms make public u
rination a regular occurrence for t
he average male! There are several
good story books on the market abou
t potty training that you can start
reading to him your child at this
stage, to help encourage an interes
t in going potty. There are books g
eared specifically to boys and thos
e geared to girls, which is helpful.

Another good sign that your child i
s ready for potty training is his a
bility to pull his pants up and dow
n by himself. If your child has mas
tered this step of dressing, potty
training will go much more smoothly.

Another important physical sign of
potty training readiness is the fre
quency with which your child urinat
es. If he is still wetting his diap
er every half and hour or so, he is
not ready. But, if he_s going one
to two hours between wet diapers, t
hen he is able to hold his urine, w
hich is critical to being truly pot
ty trained, at any age.
