SECTION 02615 CHECK VALVES
PART 1 GENERAL
A. This Section specifies all work CONTRACTOR shall provide for furnishing and
installing check valves, complete and operable, as shown and specified herein, including
coatings and linings, appurtenances, operators and accessories, in accordance with the
requirements of the Contract Documents.
1.2 Reference Specifications, Codes and Standards
A. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM):
1. A48 – Specification for Gray Iron Castings.
2. A126 – Specification for Gray Iron Castings for Valves, Flanges and Pipe Fittings.
3. A276 – Specification for Stainless and Heat Resisting Steel Bars and Shapes.
B. American Water Works Association (AWWA):
1. C508 – Swing Check Valves for Waterworks Service

1.4 Contractor Submittals
A. Shop Drawings: Shop Drawings of all valves including mounting hardware shall
be shown for each valve furnished and installed in the Work. Shop drawings shall
indicate critical dimensions, mounting clearances and any other information
necessary for ENGINEER to determine compliance with the design intent of the
B. Manufacturer’s handling, delivery, storage and installation requirements.
C. Applicable material and testing certifications.
1.5 Quality Assurance
A. Design Requirements:
1. Unless specified otherwise or shown on the drawings, provide check valves suitable
for service as follows:
a. In either vertical or horizontal position.
b. Under working pressures equal to and less than 150 pounds per square inch gage.

c. Suitable for use in wet and corrosive environments.
1.6 Material Delivery, Storage and Protection
A. All valves and accessories shall be delivered in a clean, undamaged condition and stored
off the ground, to provide protection against oxidation caused by direct ground contact.
All defective or damaged materials shall be replaced with new materials at no cost to the

A. Center Guided Check Valves: Center guided, spring loaded plug with replaceable seat
and plug, shaft guide bushing, non-slam, silent shut-off, flanged body. Cast iron body,
ASTM A126, Grade B; Plug and seat shall be bronze, ASTM A584; Spring shall be
stainless steel, ASTM A276; Shaft and bushing shall be bronze, ASTM B584. Approved
manufacturers: APCO, Model No. 600; Williams-Hager, Fig. Nos. 329, 636, or approved
B. Swing Check Valves: Iron body, bronze mounted, non-assisted, clear waterway design
with resilient material-to-metal seat construction. Working pressures shall be 175 psig
for valves 2-12 inch in diameter and 150 psig for valves from 16-24 inch diameter.
Comply with AWWA C508 in all respects. Approved manufacturers: M&H Style 59;
American Darling, Model 50, or approved equal.
C. All Rubber Check Valves: Furnish and install in compliance with manufacturer’s
specifications. Approved manufacturers: Red Valve “Tideflex”, or approved equal.
D. Swing Check Valves (sewage service): Sewage check valves 2 inches and larger, unless
otherwise noted, shall be iron body, brass trimmed, 150-psi working pressure, swing
type, balanced, external spring loaded, with a clear opening equal to or greater than the
connecting piping. The spring and lever shall be extra heavy with stainless-steel shaft
and keys. Furnish with external adjustable spring, pneumatic cushion assembly with rate
closure needle valves for adjustment of final 20% closing stroke. The valve shall be
suitable for installation in the force main piping shown and designated for non-slamming
operation. If specified in other sections or shown on the drawings, provide check valves
in force main piping with mounted position switch of type specified. Sewage check
valves shall be APCO Convertible Swing Check Series 250, or approved equal.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 Valve Installation
A. General: All valves, gates, operating units, stem extensions, valves boxes, and
accessories shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's written instructions,
shown on the drawings and as specified in Section 02611.
