Spiritual Tourism There is, without a doubt, a growing interest in spiritually-based retreat destinations. Successes like the St. Joseph Institute and destination spas like the Lodge at Woodloch illustrate first-hand that emerging interest. Pennsylvania’s consumer marketing materials are already reflecting the national shift to healthier lifestyles, organic foods and an interest in connecting with nature. St. Joseph Institute (The Alleghenies) St. Joseph Institute is a resort, spa and retreat center whose mission focuses on teaching and healing. It offers more than 50 spa and healing treatments in the region’s largest spa. In addition to being a country inn, the Institute hosts retreats sponsored by churches and various other organizations and also offers its very own retreats throughout the year. St. Joseph Institute is the only gluten-free kitchen in Pennsylvania and the only spa/resort in the country to provide guests with an entirely gluten-free menu upon request. The Institute is privately owned and non-denominational, without ties to any church or organization. Guests are welcome without regard for their religious affiliation or spiritual interests. What’s New In fall 2007, St. Joseph Institute completed an expansion program that includes a facility for meetings and banquets, a new lodge for guest accommodations, additional treatment rooms for spa and healing therapies, an office building and a gym. In February 2008, St. Joseph Institute has expanded its services to include a medical spa offering a holistic approach to health and wellness. An inter-disciplinary team of medical doctors, physical therapists, bodywork specialists, counselors and nutritionists address the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social needs of guests as they search for the path that leads to optimal health and disease prevention. Himalayan Institute (Poconos/Northeast Pa Mountains) The Himalayan Institute is a non-profit organization founded by Swami Rama of the Himalayas in 1971 to unite the ancient wisdom of the East with the modern technology of the West. A leader in the fields of yoga, meditation, spirituality, and holistic health, its programs are designed to increase inner awareness and help people live happier, healthier, and more peaceful lives.
Originally located in Chicago, Ill., the Institute’s international headquarters moved to Honesdale in 1977. Situated on more than 400 acres in the rolling hills of the Pocono Mountains, the Institute provides a wonderfully peaceful and healthy setting. Kirkridge (Poconos/Nepa) Founded in 1942 on Scottish principles, Kirkridge Retreat and Study Center in the Kittatinny Ridge of eastern Pennsylvania is one of the oldest non-denominational retreat centers in the United States, developed as a pilgrimage destination. For more than six decades, the campus – which today spans 170 acres, with accommodations for 100 guests – has provided a unique place for rest and renewal along life’s journey.
