               Shaw launches Shaw On Demand and High Definition TV
                               for customers in region

Vancouver, B.C. (January 16, 2003) – Shaw Cablesystems’ new Video on Demand service –
Shaw On Demand – is now available to customers in the Greater Vancouver area, marking the
start of the next wave of entertainment choices and home entertainment options for Shaw
customers. Shaw On Demand was first launched and introduced in the Calgary market in
September 2002.

As well, Shaw has launched its first High Definition television (HDTV) product and channels for
Greater Vancouver and is a first for British Columbia.

Shaw On Demand – An Interactive Experience
All Lower Mainland customers who subscribe to Shaw Digital cable and have a Shaw Internet
connection can now access Shaw On Demand. An exclusive, value-added benefit, Shaw On
Demand enables customers to order movies and special programming through their Internet
connection and view them at their convenience through their Shaw Digital Terminal and home

ordering and customer-interface mechanism, and Shaw’s two-way digital cable network as the

through the Shaw Digital Terminal on their home television. Customers can then view the
programming as many times as they desire during the 24 hours, using full VRC/DVD remote

HDTV – The Ultimate Viewing Experience

With the introduction of Shaw On Demand, the company has also announced the much-
anticipated arrival of the Shaw DCT 5100 HD to the Greater Vancouver area. As the consumer
market begins to see more and more HDTV-ready televisions available on the market, Shaw is
now able to power these next generation devices with channels transmitting in High Definition.
The DCT 5100 HD fully supports the decoding and processing of HDTV content without
requiring additional digital terminals or equipment.

The DCT 5100 HD, combined with an HD-ready TV, features a picture with 10 times more
detail than today’s analog channels, Dolby 5.1 Prologic Digital audio capability for a superior
sound experience, and user configurable options to provide a signal that is 33 per cent wider than
traditional television signals to fully utilize today’s wide-screen televisions.

Definition programming:
        Channel 136 – HDTV
        Channel 138 – KING (NBC Seattle)
