ECE 101 INTRODUCTON to EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION                                                       (3-0-3)
Early childhood concept, early childhood and preschool education in Turkey and in the world, description,
principles, improvement and benefits of preschool education, basic ideas of preschool education and historical
development of preschool education, present situation of preschool education in Turkey and in the world, basic
characteristics of preschool teacher, kind of preschool education’ institutions (kindergarten, day care center
etc.), physical, social and educational environment characteristics in preschool institution, family importance
and role of preschool education.

ECE 103 HUMAN ANATOMY and PHYSIOLOGY                                                          (3-0-3)
Basic information about human body and systems central and peripheral nervous system, movement system,
sense organs, transport, digestive system, respiration system, excretion system, endocrine system,
reproduction system, importance of development of these systems in 0-6 years old.

ECE 105 PSYCHOLOGY                                                                                       (2-0-2)
Description of psychology, history of psychology, contents of psychology (social psychology, clinical psychology,
educational psychology), theories of psychology (behavioral, cognitive and existential psychology etc.),

TÜRK 103 TURKISH I: WRITTEN COMMUNICATION                                                              (2-0-2)
The basic features of written language and written communication by focusing on the differences as well.
Communication, in relation to written and verbal means; subjective and objective communication; paragraph
and types of paragraph (introductory, developmental and conclusive paragraphs). Definition of text and types
of texts (informative or literary texts); basic tenets of texts (coherence, cohesiveness, intertextuality, etc.).
Written communication (free writing, pre-planned writing); stages of pre-planned writing (topic, narrowing

ENG 131 FOREIGN LANGUAGE I                                                                                     (4-0-4)
This course has been designed to enable university students to use their reading, speaking, listening and
writing skills at a certain level of efficiency in academic activities of all sorts they carry out in their study fields.
This course aims at improving linguistic and communicative competence and foreign language proficiency of the
learners by offering interesting contexts, doing exercises that boost functional use of language and using
language in real life communication.

EĞT 141 INTRODUCTION to EDUCATIONAL SCIENCES                                                          (3-0-3)
Basic concepts of education, basics of education as a science (philosophical, social, legal, psychological,
economic and political), historical development of education, methodology in educational sciences, functions of
education, social change and improvement as seen from the perspective of educational sciences, teaching as a

ECE 102 MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH and FIRST AID                                                             (3-0-3)
Description of maternal-child health, situation of child health in Turkey and in the world, cycles of pregnancy,
child development in prenatal period, effects of child development to risky conditions about disease and
accident in pregnancy, physical development in 0-6 years old (teeth, height, weight9, and follow-up, child
diseases in 0-6 years old (diary, respiration infections, immunizations and dermal diseases, parasitical
infections etc.) and prevention strategies, vaccines, health problems in period of women life, family planning,
some major injuries and prevention strategies, necessities of teachers’ in emergency situations.

Definition of development, basic concepts, factors of effecting to development, examination of prenatal, natal
and post natal periods as a developmental theories, research methods and techniques in developmental
psychology, theories of cognitive, perceptual, social, moral and personality development.

TÜRK 104 TURKISH II: ORAL COMMUNICATION                                                                    (2-0-2)
Basic features of oral language and oral communication. Oral expression; basic features of oral skills (using the
natural language and body language); basic tenets of giving a good speech; basic features of a good speaker
(stress, intonation, pitch, etc.). Impromptu and prepared speech; stages of prepared speech (selecting a topic,
narrowing-down, aim, view point, identification of main and supporting points, planning, preparing the text,
presentation of the speech). Types of speech: (dialog, conversation, introducing yourself, answering questions,
celebrating special events, such as new year’s eve, child birth, festivals, etc., giving directions, talking on the
phone, job application, interviewing, speaking on the radio and TV, etc.). Giving impromptu speech on different
topics, applications on speech samples and giving speeches, correcting errors in speech.

ATA 102 ATATÜRK’S PRINCIPLES and THE HISTORY of the TURKISH REVOLUTIONS II                                    (2-0-2)
Political revolutions, political parties, transition to multi-party period, revolutions in law, reorganization of social
life, renovations in economy. Turkish foreign policy between the years of 1923 and 1938, Turkish foreign policy
after Atatürk, principles of Turkish Revolution (Republicanism, Populism, Secularism, Revolutionism, Statism,
Nationalism).

GNK 104 COMPUTER SKILLS                                                                                  (2-2-3)
Basic concepts on computer assisted education, features, conceptual basis, advantages and limitations,
methods of application, common formats used in computed assisted teaching, selection and evaluation of
educational software, distance education, data basis applications, negative effects of the Internet and computer
on children/adolescents and ways to take precautions against these.

ENG 132 FOREIGN LANGUAGE II                                                                               (4-0-4)
This course has been designed to enable university students to use their reading, speaking, listening and
writing skills at a certain level of efficiency while conducting academic activities in their own fields. The aim
should be to raise the knowledge and abilities the students have gained in the “Foreign Language I” course to a
higher level. While doing so, attention should be paid to creating interesting contexts, doing exercises that
increase the functional competence, using the language in authentic communicative contexts and in this way to
increase the linguistic and communicative competence and the linguistic proficiency of students.

EĞT 142 EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY                                                                             (3-0-3)
The relationship between education and psychology, definition and functions of educational psychology, basic
concepts related with learning and development, developmental characteristics (physical, cognitive, emotional,
social, ethical development), the factors affecting learning, theories of learning, and the implications of learning
theories on teaching process, effective learning, and factors affecting learning (motivation, individual factors,
dynamic of group and the effects of the factors on classroom teaching process).

Importance of creativity to human and social life, creativity and related theories, relationship between creativity

teachers’ duties and responsibilities in elevating the quality of teaching.

Equipping second year departmental students with the necessary language knowledge and skills which are

ECE 204 CHILDREN’S LITERATURE                                                                            (2-0-2)
The history of literature for children in Turkey and all around the world, importance of acquainted with qualified
child books, functions of child literature production in thinking and sensitive child who has reading culture the
characteristics of children books due to their subjects (design, content and educational), exhibition with
examples of unqualified child books types and discussion of negative effects of these on developmental
characteristics of children, in teacher convenience of reading and investigating of child books as a age periods
and studies about contributions of these books to child development, different literary types towards to children
(legend, fairy tale, poem, story, novel etc.) and determination of contributions to child development of linguistic
materials.

ECE 206 TEACHING MATHEMATICS                                                                          (3-0-3)
The importance of mathematical thinking, relationship between mathematic and other variables in the
intelligent, gender and social, the development of mathematical thinking in early childhood and different
theories about these development, basic learning principles in educational programme to teach concepts of
mathematics, description of intuitive mathematic, acquiring the basic mathematical concepts in early childhood
(counting, process with natural numbers, concepts related with measurement, basic geometric shapes etc.), by
using these information constitute sample activities.

ECE 208 CHILD MENTAL HEALTH                                                                              (3-0-3)
Importance and description of child mental health, historical development in child mental health, theories
related with child mental health, characteristics of normal and abnormal behaviors, diagnosis and treatment s
of behavior and adaptation problems in children (stuttering, mutizm, enuresis, encopresis, finger sucking,
eating nails, aggression, jealousy, tics, obstinacy, sleep disorders, eating disorders, fears, attention disorders
and hyperactivity, school phobia, steal, lie) special family situation (divorced, adoptive father and mother, lost
of parent etc.) to effects of child mental health.

ECE 210 DRAMA                                                                                         (2-2-3)
The definition and meaning of educational drama, different types of drama (psycho drama, creative drama, play
and drama) and history of educational drama, structure of educational drama and using phases, classification of
educational drama as a age groups and using area, educational drama environment and teachers
characteristics, special techniques in educational drama, assessment of educational drama, integration of
pedagogic drama into daily and weekly plans in the early childhood education.

ECE 212 MATERNAL and CHILD NUTRITION                                                                     (2-0-2)
The definition and importance of nutrition, nutrient elements, food groups, enrichment of foods in terms of
nutrient values, nutrition in special cases such as pregnancy and lactation, disadvantages of bad nutrition,
problems in child nutrition, suitable nutrition for 0-6 years children, planning menus for early childhood period,
hygiene and health principles in food preparation and service.

EĞT 242 EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES and MATERIAL DESIGN                                                    (2-2-3)
Basic concepts of educational technologies, features of various educational technologies, importance and usage
of educational technologies in teaching practice, determination of the technological needs of school and
classroom, planning and pursuing the appropriate technology, developing two and three dimensional objects by
the help of educational technologies, developing teaching materials (worksheets, planning activities, acetate,
slides, visual media (VCD, DVD) materials, computer based materials), analyzing the educational software,
evaluation of the various teaching materials, Internet and distance education, visual design principles,

(rope, ball, circle, ribbon etc.), indoor games (educational games, constructive attention, constructive
sensation, constructive small motor games), rhythmic activities and play with music, learning and teaching
principles of games in preschool children.

ECE 303 MUSIC EDUCATION I                                                                           (1-2-2)
Characteristics and definition of musical types and instruments in Turkey and in the world, basic solfeggio
education (teaching of notes, values, equivalent studies, voice displacement, major and minor series, rhythm
studies, simple Turkish music rhythms, scale, tempo, nuance concepts, symbols of voice modifier), true using
of voice, techniques of true singing, deciphered and dictation studies in child songs, education of many
instruments.

The importance of the science and nature in early childhood education, the methods for teaching basic concepts
and scientific thinking of science in early childhood education, developing materials for these methods, planning
activities and practicing them, principles of the science education in the early childhood education programs.

EĞT 349 SCHOOL EXPERIENCE                                                                             (1-4-3)
Observing how a teacher and a student spend time during a day at school; how a teacher designs a lesson, how
s/he stages the lesson, applies teaching techniques and methods, makes use of in-class activities, what s/he
does for classroom management, how s/he finalizes the lesson, evaluates students’ productions; besides,
collecting data on school administration, principal’s duties and her/his relations with the society; and also,
preparing a portfolio to collect course applications.

GNK 331 ENGLISH for SPECIFIC PURPOSES I: DEVELOPING READING and WRITING SKILLS (3-0-3)
This course requires students to perceive a written text in the area in order to understand its contents. The
texts specifically selected are referred to: Literal comprehension, inferential comprehension, critical or
evaluative and appreciative comprehension; and the writing skills are developed through the texts. Students
also analyze and produce different types of writing (e.g. controlled, guided, free). The use of spelling and
punctuation conventions as well as non-alphabetic symbol use will be practiced as well.

Investigation of preschool educational situations, learning and instructional approaches, methods and
techniques, applying general instructional techniques to the subject fields (drama, play, song, sample event,

retrospective teaching technique, using micro-teaching technique.

8 years old and their musical abilities, using of music in preschool education programme, constructing
repertoire of child songs, introducing and analyzing of child songs, criterions of planning the child songs,
teaching techniques of songs in preschool, planning of educational situation as a musical education in
preschool, different musical educational techniques in the world.

Developing instructional materials according to the needs and the level of the children (puppet, stuffing toys,

sampling, data collection, methods of data collection (quantitative and qualitative data collection procedures),
data recording, analysis, interpretation and reporting.

GNK 302 COMMUNITY SERVICE                                                                                (1-2-2)
The importance of community service, identifying the contemporary issues and concerns in society and
proposing projects to overcome these issues, attending conferences, panels, symposiums as speakers or
audience, voluntary participation in various socially responsible projects, improving basic skills and knowledge
on how to apply cummunity service activies in schools.

EĞT 342 SPECIAL EDUCATION                                                                                  (2-0-2)
Definition of special education, basic principles of special education, reasons of impairment, importance of early
diagnosis and treatment, a historical approach to how people regard impairment, students with mental,
physical, visual and/or hearing impairment, children with speech defect, communication defect, learning
difficulty, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and also autistic and gifted students, teaching and education
of these student groups, teaching through games, reactions observed in the families with children in need of
special education, special education in Turkey, organizations and institutions founded for special education in

This course is designed to provide an introduction to physics and its applications in the life sciences. Hopefully
you will not only learn a good deal of physics but also see its utility in a myriad of biological and medical
applications. Throughout the course examples from life sciences will illustrate the physics. This term we’ll study
mechanics, which is the science of mass and motion, fluids, waves, sound and thermodynamics. The course
continues with electricity and electrical currents, magnetism and their connection in the subject of
electromagnetism. After that we will spend several weeks on optics, then briefly study special relativity, and
conclude with several weeks studying quantum mechanics and some nuclear physics. We’ll make numerous
connections with the life sciences, including such applications as electrophoresis and electrical forces in
molecular biology, membrane electrical properties, nerves, modern light and electron microscopy, CT and MRI
scans, lasers and their medical applications, radioisotopes in nuclear medicine, etc.
