United Airlines Baggage Rules Carry-on baggage For travel worldwide on United, you may carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop computer. - A carry-on bag must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin. - Carry-on bag dimensions should not be more than 9" x 14" x 22" (length + width + height) or 45 linear inches (the length, height and width added together). United may require that a carry-on item travel as checked baggage if the item cannot be safely stowed on a particular flight. * Carry-on baggage restrictions for flights from/within the U.S., the European Union and Japan* Liquids, gels and/or aerosols are permitted through security checkpoints. Items must fit in one clear, re-sealable quart or liter-sized plastic bag, in containers of 3.4oz/100ml or less. In the European Union, items must fit in one clear, re-sealable liter-sized plastic bag, in containers of 100ml/3.3oz or less. (Please note: The TSA's exact measurements are stated above. But for ease of memory please follow the 3-1-1 rule: http://www.tsa.gov/311/311-holiday.shtm ) Plastic bags must be completely sealed and will be x-rayed at the security checkpoint separately. The following items are allowed, but must be presented to officials at security checkpoints if they are not contained in clear plastic bags or are of greater volume than 3.4oz/100ml in the U.S. and Japan or 100ml/3.3oz in the EU: - Baby formula/milk, including breast milk, and baby food in containers if a baby or small child is traveling. - Medications (liquid, gel or aerosol) - Liquids, juices or gels for diabetic passengers who indicate a need for such items to address their medical condition. (A letter from your physician is not necessary). Passengers are permitted to take liquids, gels, and/or aerosols purchased in the boarding area onboard the aircraft. This includes all duty free items. Though there is some flexibility regarding duty free items within the EU, restrictions still apply elsewhere. *Duty free liquids, gels, and/or aerosols that exceed the TSA limit will not be permitted on most connection flights worldwide.* ** *Domestic travel baggage information* For travel on United you may check two bags free of charge within the U.S. 50 states and to/from Canada, San Juan, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas U.S.V.I. - The maximum size of each checked bag is 62 inches/158cm (length + width + height). - The maximum weight per checked bag is 50 pounds/23kg each. - United recommends that you arrive at the airport 90 minutes prior to departure to complete the check-in process. - Baggage must be checked at the airport at least 30 minutes in advance of flight departure time except for the following airports which have a 45 minute cut-off time for baggage check-in: - Atlanta, Georgia (ATL) - Charlotte, North Carolina (CLT) - Chicago, Illinois O'Hare (ORD) - Denver, Colorado (DEN) - Las Vegas, Nevada (LAS) - Los Angeles, California (LAX) - New York, New York John F. Kennedy (JFK) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PHL) - Phoenix, Arizona (PHX) - Portland, Oregon (PDX) - Sacramento, California (SMF) - San Francisco, California (SFO) - Santa Ana (Orange County), California (SNA) - Seattle, Washington (SEA) - Tampa, Florida (TPA) - Washington DC Dulles International Airport (IAD) - If these time limits are not met, United will be excluded from liability. - Each checked bag must have the name of the person traveling on the outside of the bag, and we recommend on the inside as well. - United's 1K, Premier Executive and Star Alliance Gold members are allowed a total of three pieces of checked baggage (maximum of 70 pounds/32kg each) free of charge. *Overweight baggage * On domestic flights, United considers a checked baggage item weighing more than 50 pounds as overweight. Any additional charges listed below are collected on a one-way basis. The following information for overweight baggage applies to flights within the U.S. 50 states and to/from the Caribbean. - Checked baggage weighing more than 50 pounds/23 kg will be charged $50 per piece. - These charges are in addition to any charge assessed for additional or oversized baggage. - Baggage weighing more than 100 pounds/45 kg will not be accepted as checked baggage. International allowance, size and weight rules may vary by destination. Contact United Reservations at 1-800-UNITED-1 in the U.S. or your travel agent prior to your trip for specific charges. *Excess baggage * If you check more baggage than the free baggage allowance permits, you will need to pay a charge that will vary by destination. The following information for excess baggage applies to flights within the U.S. 50 states and to/from the Caribbean and will be charged as follows: *Number of pieces in excess of free allowance* *Excess fee* 1st and 2nd piece $85.00 per piece 3rd and 4th piece $125.00 per piece 5th piece or more $200.00 per piece *Oversized baggage* - Any checked bag with a single dimension more than 62 inches/158 cm is not accepted. - In the U.S., checked baggage that exceeds 62 inches/158 cm will be charged $100.00 per piece. - Any bag that is more than 115 inches/292 cm will not be accepted. - Customers checking antlers as baggage for travel within the U.S. and to/from Canada will be charged $200.00 per set.
