YouthR ck 2008 www.youthrock.com.au Proudly sponsored by 1/25 Sponsored by Presented by Belmore Boys High School Burwood Rd Belmore NSW 2192 Tel: (02) 9758 2800 Fax: (02) 9740 5834 YouthR ck 2008 www.youthrock.com.au Proudly sponsored by The Principal School Music Co-ordinators On behalf of the YouthRock 2008 Committee, I would like to invite rock bands or similar contemporary genre music bands from your school to enter this year‟s YouthRock Competition. This letter is for the benefit of those schools who either missed the Statewide Email or have not already downloaded the information from the website. Now in its 20 year, YouthRock continues to grow. It is produced by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training in conjunction with Youth Week and Arrivealive. This year the event will be held in excellent facilities at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre. The now famous Australian group „silverchair‟ was a past YouthRock winner and YouthRock continues to identify and promote emerging amateur rock bands. Other artists include Alex Lloyd (ex Balmain High), Quirk (Moruya High) recently chosen to support the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Sony Stevanovic (Belmore Boys High) now playing lead guitar for Enrique Iglesias. Even more recently "BenJalu", the 2006 winners(Whitebridge High) have been picked up by Australia's premier booking agents "The Harbour Agency" and will embark firstly on a tour of Queensland, "Short Stack" (2006 Finalists) have been signed to a British Record Label and are in the middle of negotiations with Sony Music for Australia distribution of their forthcoming album following successful gigs with US superband "Good Charlotte" and finally "The VanDolls" (2005 winners from Georges River Secondary College have just won an international band competition, the final of which was held at the Metro, and will fly to Germany to record. Due to increasing demand for places, applicants are required to submit a “demo” DVD (or video) from which the best forty (40) bands will be chosen to participate in the week-long competition. An added bonus for 2008 is the support of FBI Radio and selected regional radio stations who will undertake live interviews with selected bands and play as many YouthRock songs as possible. Bands are also asked to include thirty seconds of road safety content with the samples provided the Arrive alive website, which could be used as part of the YouthRock 2008 radio promotion of the event. Further information will be sent to bands chosen to compete, however should you require information in the interim, please ask for the YouthRock Contact at Belmore Boys' High School on (02) 9758 2800. You can also visit www.youthrock.com.au for more information. The Arrive alive website www.arrivealive.com.au will also house some great information on the bands including videos and photos. Thank you for your interest and support. Yours sincerely, th Alan Smith Project Manager YouthRock 2008 2/25 Sponsored by Presented by Belmore Boys High School Burwood Rd Belmore NSW 2192 Tel: (02) 9758 2800 Fax: (02) 9740 5834 YouthR ck 2008 www.youthrock.com.au Proudly sponsored by COMPETITION DETAILS YouthRock aims to:1. provide live entertainment for young people. 2. give young musicians and emerging rock bands an opportunity to perform live. 3. provide young people with access to audio engineering, lighting, production and other related technical skills 4. encourage greater interest in high school music departments and assist them to promote their own bands. How To Enter 1. Bands will be selected from a DVD/ videotape accompanying their application. DVD is preferred. 2. Your DVD should contain a performance of two original songs only. DVDs should be forwarded with a completed application form and application fee. (VHS video is also acceptable). 3. The DVD should be filmed at either a live performance or rehearsal. Try to make lead vocal as clear as possible. 4. DVDs are judged by a panel and no correspondence will be entered into. 5. DVDs will not be returned to applicants and DVDs of those chosen to be part of YouthRock may appear on the Arrive alive website. 6. IMPORTANT: Again we are requesting an Audio CD, it is optional, but it is to your advantage if you have good recordings of your original songs because it means you may get radio airlplay on FBI 94.5FM and/or regional stations, maybe an interview or be part of the podcasts. See page 11 for Podcast details. 7. IMPORTANT: Voting in the Arrive alive Wildcard Competition will be based on content submitted to YouthRock organisers. Remember to include a MOV version of your music along with an MP3 sample for use on the Arrive alive website. A digital; image of the band should also be submitted in JPG format. The quality of these clips may influence voting in the Arrive alive Wildcard Competition, and could get you a place in the YouthRock final. 8. Applicants will be notified by Friday 21 March 2008 as to whether they have been successful. This will be done via email. Further information will then be forwarded to successful applicants. Bands will be selected according to the quality of their song and the performance. This is not a video clip competition. 3/25 Sponsored by Presented by Belmore Boys High School Burwood Rd Belmore NSW 2192 Tel: (02) 9758 2800 Fax: (02) 9740 5834 YouthR ck 2008 www.youthrock.com.au Proudly sponsored by 9. A Colour Photo must accompany your entry – standard size (approx.15cm x 10cm). Write your band name, school and contact details on the back of the photo. If you have a good quality digital photo, you can email this to alan.c.smith@education.nsw.gov.au with appropriate band details band name, school and contact details). Please note these photos maybe used in the media and Arrivealive website for promoting YouthRock so make them interesting and of reasonable quality. 10. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT: Arrive alive is the major sponsor of the event and their brief relates to youth road safety. In the past bands have chosen, albeit through tragic circumstance, to become involved in Arrive alive promotions because they had something they wanted to say in the hope that other young people would not be injured or lose their lives as had happened to their friend. The 2007 YouthRock CD was in fact dedicated to a young bass player who lost her life in a car smash. We therefore are requesting, if you feel passionate and think you can relay something that might assist, to include on your video entry a 30 second section describing what road safety means to you, or description of a personal experience. We are not making this compulsory, but would be appreciative if you would include such a segment in your DVD/video entry. The content will be used to form part of the YouthRock radio promotion on FBI radio and selected regional radio stations across NSW and on the Arrive alive website. 11. One Arrive alive wildcard entry from the four heats will also go through to the final. Voting be conducted via www.arrivealive.com,au. Fans will vote for their favourite band in the lead up to and during the competition. 4/25 Sponsored by Presented by Belmore Boys High School Burwood Rd Belmore NSW 2192 Tel: (02) 9758 2800 Fax: (02) 9740 5834 YouthR ck 2008 www.youthrock.com.au Proudly sponsored by YouthRock Wildcard Voting Competition The Arrive alive Wild Card Competition this year will allow voting for bands over two weeks prior to the Youthrock Final. Voting will be conducted on the Arrive alive website (http://www.arrivealive.com.au/). Voting will be based on audio and video content available on the website. Bands will have a profile page on the site, allowing users to vote for the band. Bands are therefore asked to include the following: (i) a short video of your music (.MOV files preferred, please do not submit as VHS video), (ii) an MP3 sample of one song (iii) a hi res digital image of the band (standard digital colour photo will be acceptable). Please note that the video and audio samples requested in this section are separate from those required in the demos (above). Bands are encouraged to provide high quality content, as voting will be based on the content available through the Arrive alive website. Practice filming and pointing the microphone in various directions, redirecting guitar amps etc. Outdoors with a PA can be successful - less reverberation. Also if you have a mixing desk and appropriate leads from the desk to the video camera you could try doing a mix but it must still be live (rehearsal or gig) - use a minimum of microphones - just vocals and a couple of microphones overhead to pickup the band. 15/25 Sponsored by Presented by Belmore Boys High School Burwood Rd Belmore NSW 2192 Tel: (02) 9758 2800 Fax: (02) 9740 5834 YouthR ck 2008 www.youthrock.com.au Proudly sponsored by Youthrock 2008 Podcast About the podcasts As part of this year's Youthrock, FBi Radio 94.5FM (www.fbi.org.au) and arrivealive.com.au will be putting together two podcast featuring some Youthrock entrants.
