Orleans Hotel breaks ground
Harvego Enterprises celebrated the groundbreaking of the Orleans Hotel late last month. The vacant parcel at 1022 2nd Street will be
transformed into a mixed-use project including underground parking, 7,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, 2,000 square feet of outdoor patio space, and 24 upscale rental apartments. The historic façade of the 1853 Orleans Hotel will be reconstructed with period elements including cast iron columns and balconies. “This is the first redevelopment project to break ground in Old Sacramento in nearly 40 years,” said DSP Executive Director Michael Ault. “It will add more residents to Old Sacramento and will help make Old Sacramento and Downtown a true urban neighborhood.” The project is expected to be delivered by the developer by early summer 2008.
Marriott Residence Inn opens its doors
The new Marriott Residence Inn at 1501 L Street will open its doors to visitors this month. The 15-floor hotel has 235 suites all
featuring king-sized beds, 32-inch flat screens, in-room kitchens and high-speed internet connections. A 900 square foot meeting room is also available for events and meetings. The top three floors of the building are occupied by 30 for-sale condos called The Penthouses at Capitol Park, which will be available in July. More than half of the upscale condos have already been sold. The condos will range in size from 750 to 1,389 square feet and will feature granite counters, stainless steel appliances, washer and dryers and designer selected tile and carpet. Amenities will include a private elevator and lobby entrance, access to hotel pool, gym and spa, valet parking and concierge services. For more information about the penthouses, visit www.thepenthouses.info. For hotel information, call (916) 443-0500 or visit www.marriott.com.
DSP board announcements
After 13 years of service, David Taylor of David S. Taylor Interests, Inc. has resigned his seat on the DSP Board of Directors. “David was one of the founding board members of this organization and served as chairman in the Partnership’s formative years,” said Executive Director Michael Ault. “Much of DSP’s success and credibility can be attributed to his leadership.” Roger Kittredge of David S. Taylor Interests, Inc. will fill his position on the board and has been selected to serve as treasurer for 2007.
Kipp Blewett of Rubicon Partners, previously DSP secretary, has assumed the position of vice chair. Board member Scott Gilbert of Urban Retail Enterprises, LLC. will serve as secretary.
In addition, two new seats have been added to the Board of Directors. David Brennan of CB Richard Ellis will serve as the real estate representative, while Steve Green of F&M Bank will serve as the financial services representative.

Since 1992, Discover California! at 114 J Street in Old Sacramento has carried one of the largest selections of California foods and award-winning wines in the state. Owner Vickie Allen recently expanded the business by opening Sacramento’s only underground wine bar. Located below the popular retail store, the 2,000 sq. ft. subterranean wine bar features 100 different California wines and 27 varietals from the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma to the quaint wineries in the foothills of the Sierras. “California wines are world renowned for their quality, diversity and variety,” said Allen, “Since we officially opened in April, wine enthusiasts across the state have been raising their glasses and toasting the historic district’s only wine bar as they “tour” Northern California wineries all in one convenient location.”
