                           Community-Based Mentoring/Hispanic Heritage Message
                           Hispanic Heritage Message

In the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month, On September 16th, the San Francisco
Chapter and the Wine Institute recognized Amelia Moran Ceja for accomplishments
from migrant worker to award winning vintner. Amelia is an inspiration as well as a
great example that hard work and education anything is possible. The event photos can be seen in our event
archive in our local chapter website.

Despite our growing population trends, Hispanics still lack behind in education. NSHMBA sees education as a
key to social and economic change.

The San Francisco Chapter is putting together a pilot program with Horizon Unlimited of San Francisco to
develop a community-based mentoring program. We encourage our members to participate and help us make
a difference. Together, we can change one life at a time and improve our community.

Reynaldo Cano-Boza, President-Elect 2005

Community-Based Mentoring

The San Francisco Chapter would like to invite you to become a mentor today. The Community Relations
Committee is working on developing a Community Based Mentoring Program. We will be partnering with
Horizons Unlimited of San Francisco, Inc. We will be mentoring high school students from varies schools in the
Mission District. Without your participation we can not go any further so please contact me if you are
interested and would like to make a difference in our community.

Mentoring - the presence of caring individuals who, along with parents or guardians, provide young people
with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and a constructive example - is a strategy that can help young
people of all circumstances to achieve.

Community-based mentoring:

 Offers young people the chance to develop a relationship with one or more adults, other than parents
and teachers, who become friends, role models and advocates for them.
 Can take several forms, including tutoring, career exploration, life skills development, game playing and
going to sports, and entertainment or cultural events.
 Would like a commitment of at least one year.
 In community-based mentoring, the mentor and mentee decide when mentoring activities take place.
