Concert for String Quartet, Drum and Soprano The Project Art is generally on the borderline. The greatest achievements of the human being are located on the thin line that gathers revolution and transgression with tradition, will and past. Orlando Furioso! Concert for String Quartet, Drum and Soprano, belongs to this category and is the consequence of a long decantation process. 3 Orlando Furioso! Concert for String Quartet, Drum and Soprano The staging The sound-robots are set out on stage as if they were the quintet instrumentalists, flanking a large rotating bust of Orlando of some 120 centimetres in height that dominates the space. Projected on the face is a video of Orlando singing his three arias. At the rear of the stage sits a large video screen upon which a series of subtitles and also images detailing the distinct instruments are projected in real time. The fifteen minutes of video retelling the trip to the moon capture the attention above the rest. The general approach of the scene shares the dynamism between the only human interpreter of the play, the singer, the projected images, the movement of the instruments and the lighting. 4 Orlando Furioso! Concert for String Quartet, Drum and Soprano How do they work? A computer sends specific orders to the instruments for them to execute some particular movements: 105 microkeys press the strings and the bow makes them resound. The E-BOW is an electromagnetic system that substitutes the violin’s traditional bow and that, depending on its position upon the string and that of the selected pick-up, obtains a great variety of timbres. It is fully innovative and has been specifically developed with this work in mind. Besides the E-BOW, each instrument is capable of producing two types of pizzicato and tapping styles. The sound obtained through such a process is gathered by electro-acoustic pick-ups and it is then amplified through a traditional system. No digital postproduction is needed, just a filter and a compressor rack of analog effects. Ten servomotors make the diapason turn over its vertical axis and the audible tube over its horizontal axis. This performance capacity is completely precise and synchronic, and will allow for the development of an intuitive and dynamic choreography in real time. The instruments become instrumentalists. 5 Orlando Furioso! Concert for String Quartet, Drum and Soprano The Music The music of Orlando Furioso! was commissioned to showcase for the first time the five instruments. The music has a contemporary/classic nature. It is a music aimed at a general audience and not at a more trained listener. The main features are the new possibilities that the instruments can offer and the intention of offering a play with its own musical value, in close relation to the narrative thread. 6 Orlando Furioso! Concert for String Quartet, Drum and Soprano The Libretto Orlando Furioso! Concert for a String Quartet, Drum and Soprano, divides this long epic-dramatic poem by Ludovico Ariosto, into two parts that correspond with two chapters of the book: “Orlando’s Craziness” and “The Trip to the Moon”. The first part, “Orlando’s Craziness”, narrates the history of a massive craziness. Orlando appears as both a hero and a loser. During the tireless prosecution of his disdainful beloved, he discovers the sad news: the woman he loves has given herself to a humble African soldier. Orlando loses his mind and, enraged, spreads destruction everywhere he goes. The second part, “The Trip to the Moon”, recounts the quest for Orlando’s sanity by Astolfo, his best friend. Astolfo, an English knight, reaches the moon by riding his winged horse. There he meets St. John the Evangelist, who shows him the place where all the lost things on Earth accumulate –lovers’ sighs, adulations, spare time, frustrated wishes, youthful beauty...- There he finds, inside a bottle, Orlando’s lost power of reason. Astolfo recovers it and returns to African soil to bring it back to its rightful owner. This allows Astolfo to go back to his adventures as a Charlemagne knight. 7 Orlando Furioso!
