Lancaster & District YMCA’s General Secretary
Paul Ireland September 2005
The research was facilitated by the Lancaster & District YMCA and it’s Yz Up (Wise Up) worker
Paul Ireland, and commissioned by the Lancaster District Local Strategic Partnership.
The research was supported by Lancaster Connexions P.A.Y.P Team, Mark & Melody at X/S,
and the YMCA Mentor Group (Charlie Little, Kevin Murtaugh, Terry McLaughlin) Faye Clarke
for proof reading . A very big thank you to all those that assisted in the research, without their
involvement this piece of research would not have been possible.
A massive thank you to the Schools that were involved in providing an excellent subject
sample, and for their forward thinking approach in wanting to be part of such an undertaking. I
will not disclose the names for the schools for confidentiality reasons, and to protect their valid
concerns that the local community might misperceive their willingness to be involved as
admitting to having a problem with alcohol in their institutions, and this was definitely not the
PC Timothy Dodgson the Youth Involvement Officer of Lancashire Constabulary for Lancaster
& Morecambe, and Julia Whitehead from Lancaster YOT for providing and helping with the
crime statistics, and to the other officers who have informally contributed anecdotal evidence.
Finally, to Travellers Choice and Battersby’s Coach Hire, Chantelle and her team at
Morecambe Superbowl for accommodating all our wishes and demands, and for providing us
with an excellent venue with a relaxed atmosphere and safe environment that the young
people enjoyed to the full.
