TOPS TIPS FOR COURSEWORK:
 Make sure that you know how many pieces of coursework your son/daughter needs
to complete and what the deadlines are.
 Provide him/her with a quiet space where s/he can focus on this work without too
     many distractions.
 Make sure that s/he has the right equipment/materials to complete the task (e.g. a
copy of the assignment title, helpsheet, ink in the printer).
 Check that your son/daughter knows what his/her target grade is and understands
what s/he needs to do in order to achieve this.
 Ask your son/daughter if you can read his/her work. If there is something you don’t
understand, ask him/her to explain it. Extra detail in a piece of work can often help a
student to achieve a higher grade.
 If your son/daughter is studying a particular book or film, try to read the book or
watch the film yourself so that you can talk about it together.

TOP TIPS FOR REVISION:
 Provide a quiet place in which your son/daughter can revise. Be aware though – the
revision process itself doesn’t have to be quiet.
 Encourage your son/daughter to revise with a friend. They can test each other on key
quotations; practise writing mini answers and assess each other’s work using the
assessment criteria that they have used in class.
 Encourage your son/daughter to attend the after school revision sessions that we run
in college and talk to them about what they’ve learnt.
 Allow them to use the Internet to find materials that will support their revision. Many
websites now have audio files which can be downloaded onto MP3 players and iPods.

Top Tips:
Your child should:
   1. Learn the key acronyms e.g. BEEFS, SPORTMIF, CRABPS, FITT etc. These will help
quickly recall key components of fitness and principles of training.
   2. Ensure that he/she knows the difference between Health-Related components of
fitness (BEEFS) and Skill-Related (CRABPS) components of fitness. Have clear
examples of these in use in specific activities.
   3. When learning names of bones, muscles, parts of the heart and lungs make sure that
he/she understands the function of each of these.
   4. Support each answer with an example/explanation.
   5. Mind maps are a great way of remembering key information; particularly anatomy and
      physiology (Section C).
   6. Opposites. Remember sometimes you only need to learn the details of one thing and
remember that the opposite thing has the opposite qualities e.g. arteries and veins,
aerobic and anaerobic, fast-twitch and slow-twitch fibres, inspiration and expiration

Top Tips:
Your child should:
  1. Make sure he/she understands what the grading criterion is asking
him/her to do; use the grading criteria. E.g. If it asks you to
describe you need to paint a picture with words so the reader can
understand what it is you are talking about.

  2. Proof read his/her work before you submit it – e.g. so it’s
understandable, grammatically correct and answers the question.

  3. Plan the answer out before he/she begins to write it – e.g. a
skeleton overview of your planned work.

  4. Ensure that keywords/areas are covered in the answer; make sure
he/she uses the cross reference sheets for this.

talk through coursework and encourage students to record their findings in
their own words rather than simply ‘cutting and pasting’.
 Watching relevant programmes on the television can be helpful – for example,
     Masterchef and Grand Designs.
 Proof read sections of the folder work.
 For Food students please provide ingredients for practical outcomes on the
     identified dates.
 For Textile students please ensure materials are in school at the specified time
     for final practical work.
 Support students in their work to ensure it is completed before the deadlines
     set.
 Please talk to members of our team as soon as possible should
     problems/concerns arise.
