Title:                  Food Tray
Placement:              Year 8 – 10 Weeks.
Area of Study:          Products - Industrial

Design Situation:
• You have been asked to come up with a design for a TRAY for carrying food around your
   house. The design is to be suitable for mass production in a small furniture workshop.

Design Brief:
• Design and manufacture a prototype TRAY.

Investigations:
• Sketch and measure some of the items which could go on a TRAY, (then decide on the size
    of your TRAY)
• Look for ideas for a TRAY: in magazines and in shops around of Orange. (Your product
    should be aesthetically pleasing and possibly match existing items in your house.)
• Make DETAIL 2-D and 3-D drawings of your design.
• Investigate the types of materials which could be used for a TRAY (List good and bad
    qualities)
• Investigate possible methods of construction and sketch some of these methods. (joints &
    fittings etc)
• Investigate possible finishes that could be used on a TRAY, giving reasons for your choice of
    finish.
• Investigate methods of mass production of the TRAY, and draw a FLOW CHART showing
    how you would mass produce the TRAY.




Limitations: The following materials for use in the manufacture of the TRAY:
• Radiata pine: 140mm x 19mm & VJT&G 140mm x 12mm

Specifications
• Size: The TRAY should be no larger than 350 wide x 600 long and 70 high.

Assessment: Design & Folio 30%, Product 70%

Report – Wood Tray Project
o Your report is to be presented electronically by placing your work in the 2012 ‘Snare Hand In’
   folder.
o Students are encouraged to use computer applications such as word processing and spread
   sheets for this report. The suggested length of the document is listed in brackets below.

The format for your report is below.

    o   Cover Page Include the following (1 page)
           o Your Name
           o Your Class

           o Your Teachers Name

    o   Research
           o Sketch and measure some of the items which could go in the tray. (1 page)
           o Make 2-D and 3-D drawings of your design. (2 pages)

               explain some of the features of your tray. (1 page)

           o Here you are to draw up a table and list all the components of your tray. (1 page)
           o Shown below is a sample cutting list.

    o   Construction Procedure
           o Here you are required to outline the steps and/or processes involved with the
               construction of your project. Follow these guidelines. (2 pages)
                       Begin with a new step on a new line.
                       Number each step.
                       Include a sketch/photo with each step. Be precise with the description of
                       each step.
                       Give detailed instructions; be careful not to leave out crucial steps.

    o   Project Evaluation
           o You are to evaluate your Practical Project. This will involve listing all positive and
                negative aspects of the project. State what problems you encountered, and how
                you solved these problems. (1 Page)
