Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might
be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that
everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labour through your work you may say that you're "hot".
That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body
temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For
others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so,
but it leads to such familiar monologues as:Get up John! You'll be late for work
again! The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature
and energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives
realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family
has.

One of the world's most deadly health problems is spreading to new places. The
problem is heart disease and it is affecting more and more people in developing
nations. For years heart disease has been the number one cause of death in most
industrial nations. The heart disease has claimed more life than cancer, accidents
or AIDS. In the past in most developing nations fewer people died from heart disease.
They died instead from diseases such as lung disease. Now the World Health
Organization has warned that heart disease is increasing rapidly in almost every
developing nation. Why is this happening? One reason is that people in developing
nations are living longer. Another reason is that many people have changed the way
they live. They now eat more fat and salt and eat fewer fruits and vegetables. They
drink more alcohol and they smoke more tobacco products. More people also work in
offices now. They sit at the desk all day. They do not get enough physical exercise.
The World Health Organization is worried about the increase in heart disease in
developing areas. It has called on health experts in these countries to learn more

We all get tired when night comes. Then we need to sleep. That is why we need
beds. But not all beds are the same. There are many kinds of beds.
One kind of bed is the bunk bed. Bunk beds are two beds placed one on top of
the other. This kind of bed doesn't take up as much room as two beds side by side.
It's a nice way to sleep if two or more children are sleeping in the same room. That
is why families with many children use them.
A water bed can be a lot of fun. It is a very big bag that's filled with water.
The water can be made nice and warm. You move up and down as the water moves. It's
some thing like being on a boat. It rocks you to sleep.
A cot is a very light bed. When it's not being used, you can fold it up and put
it out of the way. Then you can take it out again when you need it. You can use it
for a friend. A cot is just right for someone who is sleeping over.
In some places people sleep on mats. The mats are made of long pieces of grass.
People take them out at night. Then they put the mats right on the floor. In the
morning people take them up off the floor and roll them up. Think of how much room
a house has with no beds!
