POSITION:          Zoning Officer

POSITION REPORTS TO: Assistant Township Planner
HOURS/WEEK: 40                         OVERTIME STATUS: NON-EXEMPT (eligible for O/T)
GRADE LEVEL: 6          SALARY RANGE: $23.18
PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Performs an extensive variety of routine and complex administrative, technical and
professional work in the interpretation and enforcement of township zoning laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations.
Work is performed under general direction of the Township Engineer/Planner and Assistant Township Planner.
Receive, log in and review all construction permits and CO’s for compliance with zoning regulations. Perform field
inspections for all construction CO’s. Advise residents, prospective residents, developers, real estate professionals,
attorneys, engineers and architects on compliance with zoning regulations. Review all zoning (fence, driveway,
patio, shed, pillar) permits; field inspect for final approvals. Review “Solicitor”, “Temporary Sign” and news rack
permit applications. Investigate all violations or alleged violations of the zoning ordinance, prepare summonses and
make Municipal Court appearances as required. Perform necessary inspections to determine building locations or
uses are as shown on approved plans, or are being constructed in compliance with zoning ordinances. Respond to
local citizens inquiring about local planning and zoning regulations and ordinances. Prepare and supervise the
preparation of reports. Direct the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files. Perform
inspections on Township Conservation Easements completing an inspection on every easement once in a two year
period. Perform other duties as assigned. Required to conduct inspections in the field and may be exposed to hot,
cold, or humid weather conditions. May traverse tough terrain.

REQUIREMENTS: Thorough knowledge of State, County and Township Land Use laws and ordinances. General
knowledge of legal procedures related to the enforcement of zoning laws and ordinances. Ability to analyze and
interpret the local zoning ordinance and other local ordinances that apply to buildings, and State and County laws,
rules, regulations, and policies applicable to buildings and zoning. Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and
informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Ability to read and interpret
engineering plans, specifications and blueprints and compare them to construction in progress to determine
compliance with development approvals. Working knowledge of MS Office suite and the ability to learn Geo Client.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with State, County and local officials, associates, subordinates, the general public and co-workers.
Physical agility to traverse tough terrain, take measurements, and safely work in and around construction
equipment and motor vehicles. Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate complex ideas
effectively both orally and in writing in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in
planning or closely related field desired. A valid appropriate driver’s license. Three (3) years of experience in the
preparation and review of building construction plans and specifications or in the fulltime inspection and
enforcement of zoning and/or building construction laws and regulations.
