Western Regional Chair Says Thanks
It was back in June 2008 when as club Secretary I received a letter from the then GRCA Western Regional Vice President, Linda Shipman asking if our
club was interested in hosting the 2009 GRCA Western Regional. Sixteen years had passed since I had last chaired the GRCA Western Regional (1993)
and I was game to tackle the project again. I brought the idea forward to our GRCGLA board and they agreed to have GRCGLA host the event as well as
allowing me to be the chairperson. Of course it would take a village to pull it off and that we had! Nancy Talbott was amazing in helping to coordinate club
volunteers for both the Western and the Inconjunction Specialty with Lake Mathews. Nancy also found time to chair the specialty on Saturday as well as
the CCA on Sunday. It was Nancy who helped me and others see the importance of holding the CCA in conjunction with the Western. I cannot thank
Nancy enough for her guidance, patience, and all around contributions. Nancy you are amazing! Also amazing and gratifying were the sheer number of
club members who volunteered their time to make our Western Regional and Saturday Specialty—resounding successes! So many of the exhibitors
complemented the club on the wonderful job we did! Without our club membership pitching in to help, we could not have pulled these two specialties off!
There are so many people that both Nancy and I would like to acknowledge for their efforts in putting both the Western and Inconjunction with Specialty
together. Nancy was there on Thursday to help set up our California Dreamin show site joined by George Joseph, Christy Anderson, David Ross, Gerri
Monohan, and Mary Fry. Jennifer Mohr with the help of Kathy Knittle, Elizabeth Kelly, Paula Rowan, Patti Potter, Judy Voss, and Sarah Sykes helped to
make our Raffle a financial success. Year after year, Jennifer and her helpers receive compliments on the quality of the raffle and once again you out did
yourselves! Treasurer Michael Mohr took on the task of catalog sales, assisting with the raffle, and tracking the BBQ/lunch sales. Janet Peacock who is
the GRCA Secretary volunteered to help on Friday and manned the sales of our tee shirts and sweatshirts. Jane Jensen, Donna Jacobs, and Trisha
Kerrigan did an outstanding job with our morning and afternoon hospitality. A big thank you to Anne Shannon for the use of her motorhome and making
our morning coffee! Laura Turner coordinated hospitality with our CCA/WC/WCX on Sunday. In addition, Laura with a quick “I’ll do it” helped in
transporting one of our judges from LAX to Ontario. And another transportation life saver was Bob Margolis who took our judge back to LAX from the
showsite and then drove Judge Dorothy Macdonald back to the hotel. Gerri Monohan was Obedience/Rally Chair and invaluable to insure that these two
events went off without a hitch! Our agility trial, thanks to Chairman Julia Wolfe and club members Dave Shelburne, Cindy Gray, Dena Atkins, Jane
Collins and Miki Shannon was another success story. Rebecca Scribner worked tirelessly to solicit trophy donations for both our Western and Saturday
Specialty. Rebecca together with Robert Scott, Mark Grey, Ed and Bonnie Gaicki, created those wonderful buckets for Saturday’s show. Thank you to
Merry Shelburne for organizing the catalog as well as soliciting and organizing the ads. The catalog was beautiful. Gloria Henderson and helper, Cheryl
Johnson were responsible for the lovely flowers and plants which decorated our shows. The conformation ring stewards included our own George Joseph,
Kim Johnson, Laurie Krekemeyer, Nancy Talbott, and visitor from the east coast Deb Donnell. Our stewards made for a very smooth show as the day
progressed. Our evening BBQ was organized by Cathie Turner who also secured those beautiful wine glasses with our Specialty Logo! Terrie Johnson
organized and handled the Parade of Titleholders. Miki Shannon did a great job with the beautiful Specialty Ribbons as well as she was chair of the WC/
WCX. Together with WC/WCX secretary, Karen Webb, Miki and Karen organized a most successful event. Helping with the WC/WCX on Sunday were
Joyce Davis, Teri Chang, Jane Collins, Dave Shelburne, Apryl Dowse and Jim Stevens. Helping Nancy with the CCA was CCA secretary Linda Richardson
as well as Faye Okurowski, Dodi Meister, Robin Nicholls, Joy Van Wie and Kathy Clarke which concluded the 2009 GRCA Western Regional As I said in
the beginning it takes a Village….and the 2009 GRCA Western Regional could not have taken place without the participation and help of the GRCGLA
Village! And I would also like to acknowledge our wonderful judges who definitely put their marks on our specialty: Dorothy Macdonald, Sandy Dunn,
Cathy Story, Bernadette Cox, Judy Slayton-Bachofner, Mark Upshaw, Lynne Eggers, Vita Allison, Ed & Candy Ferner, Gerri Monohan, Frank Holbert,
Pluis Davern, and Howard Falberg! So if my math is right, I guess I’m good until 2025.
Sharon Shilkoff, 2009 Western Regional Show Chairman
WRITE TO YOUR STATE SENATORS: NO ON SB 250
If you value your right to own dogs, write to your state senators and ask them to oppose SB 250, a
nasty piece of legislation that is both fiscally irresponsible and unconstitutional.
This ill-considered bill, which targets all pet owners rather than just the irresponsible ones, is a mandate
that would increase both local and state financial commitments during a nationwide economic crisis.
The cost would cause many owners to surrender their animals to shelters, resulting in more
overcrowding and increased euthanasia.
Responsible dog owners who receive one “citation” (not a conviction) for a laundry list of infractions
would be forced to spay/neuter any intact animals and would never again be allowed to have an intact
license. It is a one-strike law with a life sentence. There is no due process, which is the right of all
citizens.

GRCGLA Code of Ethics
It is the purpose of the Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles to encourage its members to perfect, through selection, exhibition, training and husbandry the type of dog
most suitable in all respects for work as a companionable gun dog and to do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of the Golden Retriever. In addition, it is
asserted that this club owes an obligation to future members and others interested in the Golden Retriever breed, and thereby sets forth this code of ethics.
Responsibilities of members:
Members must ensure that their dogs are kept safe and under control at all times. Members should properly train their dogs so that they are an asset to the community and
not a nuisance.
Members must assume the responsibility of maintaining the best possible standards of proper feeding, health, veterinary care, and training for all Golden Retrievers in their
care.
Members should read and familiarize themselves with the Golden Retriever Club of America Breed Standard for the Golden Retriever.
Members should support and abide by the rules of the American Kennel Club.
Members must always conduct themselves at any dog event in a manner that will reflect well upon GRCGLA and the Golden Retriever breed.
Members must refrain from public criticism or maligning of other members or their dogs, or other Golden Retriever clubs.
Members responsibilities include educating the public about the breed, keeping in mind that they and their dogs represent the breed, the GRCGLA and the sport of purebred
dogs in general.
GRCLGA members who breed will do all in their ability to maintain the purpose of the Golden Retriever and are expected to demonstrate honesty and fairness with other
owners and breeders, purchasers of dogs and the general public.
Members must breed only registered Golden Retrievers with other registered Golden Retrievers, and keep accurate records of ownership, health, and matings.
When breeding a litter, members must do all in their ability to maintain the natural ability and personality of the Golden Retriever for work as a gun dog. Breeding stock should
be selected with the objectives as elucidated in the Golden Retriever Club of America by laws:
“Recognizing that the Golden Retriever breed was developed as a useful gun dog, to encourage the selection by careful and selective breeding of Golden
Retrievers that possess the appearance, structure, soundness, temperament, natural ability and personality that are characterized in the standard of the breed,
and to do all possible to advance and promote the perfection of these qualities.” (Paraphrased from Article I, Section 2 of the GRCA bylaws, as amended in 1995.)
Members must breed a litter only when it is conscientiously felt that such breeding will result in improvement or preservation of the qualities inherent in the breed. Prior to any
breeding, owners of the bitch and dog shall supply to each other accurate and complete information on their dog or bitch with respect to all genetic testing, or undesirable
characteristics of which they are aware.
Members must agree that animals selected for breeding should:
1. be of temperament typical of the Golden Retriever breed; stable, friendly, trainable, and willing to work. Temperament is of utmost importance to the breed and must never
be neglected;
2. be in good health, including freedom from communicable disease;
3. possess the following examination reports in order to verify status concerning possible hip dysplasia, hereditary eye or cardiovascular disease, and elbow dysplasia:
a) Hips: appropriate report from Orthopedic Foundation for Animals; PennHip; Ontario Veterinary College; BVA/KC Hip Score (Great Britain) or at least a written report
from a board-certified veterinary radiologist (Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiologists).
b) Eyes: appropriate report from a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) or from a BVA/KC-approved ophthalmologist (Great Britain).
c) Hearts: appropriate report from a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Medicine, Cardiology Specialty.
d) Elbows appropriate report from Orthopedic Foundation for Animals or at minimum a written report from a board-certified veterinary radiologist (Diplomate of the
American College of Veterinary Radiologists).
Consideration should be given also to other disorders that may have a genetic component, including, but not limited to, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, skin disorders
(allergies), and orthopedic disorders such as osteochronditis.
4. Assuming all health and examination reports are favorable, the age of the breeding pair also is of consideration. Generally, a Golden Retriever is not physically and
mentally mature until the age of 2 years; an individual dog’s suitability as a breeding animal is difficult to assess until that time.
Members must screen all prospective purchasers to assure that each puppy will have a safe and loving home. Each breeder shall accurately represent each puppy to the
prospective purchaser and furnish prospective purchasers with information on appropriate genetic clearances on the sire and dam, as well as health records on each puppy.
Details on feeding and proper care shall be provided to the purchaser.
Members must never knowingly place a Golden Retriever with persons who would not provide proper and humane care to the dog, or sell any Golden Retriever to a pet shop,
research facility, wholesale dealers in dogs, or offer for auction any Golden Retriever.
It is recommended that members should release puppies to new homes no earlier than the age of eight weeks.
Members must agree that the purchaser of any puppy not sold as a dog to be shown in competition or as a breeding animal be provided with an AKC Limited Registration for
that puppy.
Members must accept lifetime responsibility for those animals that are the result of their breeding and are at risk of abandonment, in need of rescue, or found in an animal
shelter.
Accepting membership in the GRCGLA signifies acceptance of this Code of Ethics.
Failure to abide by the GRCGLA Code of Ethics is subject to disciplinary actions up to and including loss of membership.
