     A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

I t is with great pleasure that I would like to invite you to Kuantan, Pahang,
Malaysia and participate in our East Cost Surgical Symposium 3 on Pelvic Floor
Disorders from 15th to 16th August 2008. “Towards Optimal Management” has
been chosen as the theme for this coming symposium. This symposium is jointly
organized by the Colorectal Unit, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine,
International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Department of Surgery, Tengku
Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) and the Malaysian Society of Colorectal Surgeons
(MSCRS).

This Symposium, the first of its kind in Malaysia, will focus on the
fundamental issues and recent advances in the management of pelvic floor
disorders. The organizing committee has prepared a very attractive and informative
scientific programme which includes pre-congress workshops, plenary sessions,
symposia and case discussions.

Two pre-congress workshops will be conducted on 13th to 14th of August
2008 on Anorectal Physiology and Endo-anal Ultrasound. We have chosen these
two topics as they form the core investigations in the management of patients with
pelvic floor disorders. We have gathered internationally reputed experts in these
fields to facilitate the pre-congress workshops

Our invited faculty includes experts from United Kingdom, United States
of America, Australia, Sri Lanka and Singapore who are known internationally for
their extensive research and experience in treating pelvic floor disorders. We also
have senior and experienced local speakers from different disciplines who have
been involved in the management of patients with pelvic floor disorders in this
country.

I am confident that this symposium will provide fundamental and current
advances on Pelvic Floor Disorders. I am sure that this symposium definitely offers
an opportunity for clinicians to meet each other for academic exchange and to build
friendship. I look forward to seeing you in Kuantan in our future symposium.

                                                 PAHANG

Pahang Darul Makmur, which covers an area of 35,960 sq. km, is the largest state
in Peninsular Malaysia. Nearly two-third of this area is enveloped in verdant
rainforest, making it magnificent enclave of lush greenery, exotic wildlife and
nature’s wonders. The country’s premier national park, Taman Negara as well as

      heritage.

Pahang’s name is believed to be derived from the ‘mahang’ tree according to a
Malay legend. Other sources attribute it to traders from China who called it
‘Pang-Hang’, which slowly became Pahang in spelling and pronunciation.

With population of 1 million, the state, which lies on the East Coast, offers the
finest in beaches such as the famous Cherating Beach, Teluk Chempedak and
Beserah Beach. There are the renown hill resorts of Cameron Highlands, Genting
Highlands and Fraser's Hill. If you are looking for adventure, why not visit parks
such as Kenong Rimba, Endau-Rompin and Taman Negara (National Park).
