Therapeutic grade essential oils are powerful—and they are not drugs. They work by supporting normal body processes rather than by suppressing or altering the body’s biochemical processes. Because the oils work by supporting normal body processes, the healthier those processes are to begin with, the more quickly and effectively the oils can work. Lifestyle changes, as a result, can increase the oils’ effectiveness. The following tips are based on the accumulated experience of thousands of people who have used oils to address their own health concerns. • Use the power of intention. Thousands of scientific studies confirm that matter responds to our thoughts, intentions, and prayers. You can enhance the effectiveness of your oils by focusing on how you would like them to help you and then, after you use them, giving thanks for the support they provide. • Make sure you have enough water in your body. Here is a simple guideline for getting the right amount: a) Write down your body weight in pounds. 2) Divide this number in half. 3) The number your division gave you is the number of fluid ounces of water you need each day. (There are 8 fluid ounces in one cup.)

• Emphasize whole foods in your diet. The body functions well on plenty of fruits and vegetables (with the latest scientific research recommending four to five cups daily), whole grains, high quality protein foods (organic meats, poultry, eggs, and dairy), and cultured foods such as plain yogurt, kefir, and raw fermented vegetables. A healthy diet also includes essential fatty acids (EFAs), available in some ocean fish, fish oil supplements, flax oil, and hemp oil.
• Reduce or avoid foods and beverages that stress the body. The most important items on this list are white sugar, white flour, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oil, trans fats, and coffee. • Avoid petrochemically-based personal hygiene and household products. Most drug store and grocery hygiene and house cleaning products are made of petroleum, and generally also contain many chemicals that are harmful to our personal and environmental health. Chemicals from these products can cross the blood-brain barrier contributing to mental fog and memory loss, disrupt hormone balance, and accumulate under the skin. These chemicals interfere with the body’s ability to fully utilize essential oils. Occasionally people have a dermatitis-like reaction to essential oils and it is usually because the oils are reacting with accumulated chemicals under the skin from personal care and household cleaning products. Oils themselves, except for citrus oils, do not contain the protein molecules that are capable of catalyzing an allergic reaction. Young Living makes safe personal and skin care products. Young Living also makes a very concentrated essential-oil enhanced house cleaning product, called Thieves Cleaner, which can be used for floors, pots and pans, laundry, windows, tile, glass, etc. Most health food stores also carry safe house cleaning products.
