Dr. Ragai obtained a B.Sc. in Chemistry (with high honors) and an M.Sc. in Solid State Science
both from the American University in Cairo. She conducted her doctoral studies in Chemistry at Brunel, the
University of West London, in the UK, earning her Ph.D. in 1976. Since then Dr. Ragai has been a faculty
member in the Chemistry Department of the American University in Cairo. Her teaching is focused on the
area of Physical Chemistry.
From1998-2000, Dr Ragai was Chair of the AUC University Senate and from 2000-2007, she was
the Chair of the AUC Chemistry Department.
Dr. Ragai’s research interest is in Surface Chemistry, and her published work deals with the
gas/solid and liquid/solid interfaces. She presently heads the surface chemistry research group at the
Youssef Jameel, Science and Technology Research Center (STRC) of AUC.
She also has a keen interest in Archaeological Chemistry and has published several articles that
deal with the interaction of the Humanities and the Sciences. From 1980/1981 she was a chemical
consultant to the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) Sphinx project. In 1993/1994 she served on
the National Committee for the Study of the Giza Sphinx, and is presently a member of the Board of
Governors of the ARCE.
Professor Ragai is mentioned in Who’s Who in the World, Dictionary of International Biographies
and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and was twice the recipient of the AUC Trustees merit award.
