An Evening with Director James Ivory
On Wednesday, January 13, the DGA East
Coast Special Projects Committee hosted
a special evening with 1995 DGA Lifetime
Achievement Award Recipient James Ivory in the
Guild’s offices in New York.
Moderated by East Coast Special Projects
Committee Chair Raymond DeFelitta (The
Thing About My Folks), Ivory used clips to
illustrate several recurring themes in his five
decades of filmmaking: the intrigue and love
found by the English abroad illustrated by
Shakespeare Wallah, Quartet, Heat and Dust,
and A Room with a View; the impact of World
War II demonstrated by Mr. & Mrs. Bridge, The
Remains of the Day and The White Countess;
and a theme of the underlying eros in his films,
as shown by A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries,
The Golden Bowl and Le Divorce.
At the conclusion of panel, Mr. Ivory treated those
present to a scene from his soon to be released

On Tuesday, February 2, the DGA Latino
Committee hosted a Q&A with director Kenny
Ortega (High School Musical) following
a special screening of his acclaimed
documentary This Is It in the Guild’s Los
Angeles theatre.
After an introduction by Latino Committee
Co-Chair Betty Kaplan (One Hot Summer),
Ortega talked about his work, the use of
dance in film, and how he went about creating
the documentary This Is It, a behind-the-
scenes glimpse into the world of pop singer
Michael Jackson who was in preparation for
a series of sold-out shows in London before
his untimely death in 2009. The discussion
was moderated by Maria Jimenez Henley,
the 2010 Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement
Award-winning Stage Manager who was a
dancer in the iconic film West Side Story.
