Instituto Veris
The institution was established as Instituto Brasileiro de Mercado de Capitais (the Institute) in 1970 in Rio de
Janeiro. It began as a research institution, devoted to studying the operations of financial and capital markets.
The first business education programs were started, still in Rio de Janeiro, in 1985. In 1987, the first Executive
MBA program classes were offered in São Paulo. The undergraduate Business Administration and
Economics, after receiving authorization from the Ministry of Education of Brazil, began in São Paulo in 1999.
In March 1999, a group of investors led by Claudio Haddad and Paulo Guedes acquired all the educational
activities of the Institute, including assets, liabilities, trademarks, and licenses. As a result, Ibmec São Paulo
became a branch of IBMEC Educacional S.A., a for profit organization.
In October 2003, Claudio Haddad and his partners, Jorge Paulo Lemann, Carlos Alberto da Veiga Sicupira,
and Marcel Herrmann Telles acquired the shares of the remaining partners and thus became the exclusive
controllers of IBMEC Educacional.
In March 2004, Ibmec São Paulo and all its educational activities were donated to Instituto Veris, a nonprofit
organization. At the same time, IBMEC Educacional S.A. was converted into Veris Educacional S.A., a for
profit company that operates two other IBMEC units, located in Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, in addition
to IBTA – Instituto Brasileiro de Tecnologia Avançada – that offers courses in technology in São Paulo,
Campinas, and São José dos Campos.

• It is easy to open a bank account with UNIBANCO at the Ibmec São Paulo lower level (1st garage level).
However, you should first register yourself at Policia Federal. Then, you will have to go to Receita Federal at
Av. Prestes Maia, 733 (near Luz Metro Station), between Monday and Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, and ask for
a CPF (personal tax identification card) for students. You should go there with the following documents:

WELCOME TO Ibmec São Paulo!

        • Passport

        • Proof of Residence (ex. electricity bill)

        • Your RNE (the receipt you received after registering at Polícia Federal)

After receiving your CPF, go to the Ibmec Sao Paulo UNIBANCO branch with the following documents:

        • RNE

        • Passport and copy of passport

        • Proof of Residence

        • Letter from Ibmec São Paulo (You can get this from the exchange program’s office. It is a letter
stating that you are an exchange student at Ibmec São Paulo).

• Credit cards such as American Express, Diners Club, Master Card and Visa are widely accepted here.

• Citicorp and Banco Itaú have automatic teller machines which allow for cash transactions with bank and
credit cards on the Master Card or Cirrus systems (Citicorp has a limited number of machines in the city, but
Banco Itaú machines can be found everywhere).

• Bradesco and Banespa automatic teller machines permit transactions using Visa debit and credit cards.

• There are AMEX locations at the São Paulo international airport (Guarulhos) and at Condomínio São Luis
(Av. Paulista 2300, loja 6, entrance through Haddock Lobo St. number 400). At these locations, American
Express cardholders (not including Optima cardholders) may cash traveler checks, purchase US traveler
checks, and withdraw cash from their personal bank account by writing a personal check.

Most places that exchange currency will only buy US dollars, either in cash or traveler checks. A limited
number of banks will exchange Euros or pound sterling. Most commercial banks will exchange currency,
although some may require a minimum amount to be exchanged. Money can also be exchanged at any
currency exchange office.

Inexpensive, as well as expensive, restaurants can be found throughout the city, but if you don’t want to cook
everyday, the most inexpensive way to eat is in the “Restaurantes por Quilo” nearby, which means that the
restaurant charges a certain price so the cost of your meal depends on its weight.

Meat, fresh fruit, and vegetables are relatively cheaper here in Brazil than in other countries.

Imported foods, both perishable and non-perishable, are usually more expensive than national brands.

WELCOME TO Ibmec São Paulo!
