A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

As principal of Thomas Dale High School I want to first of all thank all those who give so freely of their time
supporting the faculty, staff, and students of our school. All that you do directly supports the wonderful
experiences each student receives while attending Dale. As we begin a new school year, I would like to
encourage all parents to become members of our wonderful PTSA and for those who wish to get involved
please let us know so that we can get you in touch with the right person or persons. Working together, we
can make our school a wonderful place to work and learn and provide our students with many wonderful
memories. Speaking of memories, this year we will celebrate 100 years as a school. This is a milestone
that very few schools reach. If you are called to participate in some way in the monthly celebrations, please
do so. As part of the celebration, we have commissioned a 100 year alumni directory for anyone interested.
Please feel free to purchase one if you desire but know that we only made this available to alumni who may
want a directory. It was not our intention to pressure anyone to buy a directory; we just felt it was one way to
celebrate 100 years of existence.

We are excited about this coming year and the many monthly celebrations that are being planned. We
hope that all of our parents will join the Dale PTSA this year and make it the best year ever. I look forward
to meeting and working with many of you this coming year.

Rob Stansberry
Principal
Thomas Dale High School PTSA Membership

The Thomas Dale High School PTSA invites you to join with us to make a difference in the
education for our children. We ask for your support by becoming a member of the Thomas Dale
PTSA this year. Each membership is $5.00 (Thomas Dale keeps $2.50 and the other $2.50 goes to
State & National PTA). Our portion of the dues goes to funding teacher appreciation activities,
student scholarships, Arts in Education and insurance for the After Prom and After Grad
celebrations. Simply fill out the membership information card at the bottom, enclose with your dues,
put it in a sealed envelope addressed to the “PTSA” and turn it in to your child’s first period teacher,
or mail it to the school. All membership cards will be returned through your child’s first period
teacher in an envelope addressed to you.

An added incentive to being a member of the Thomas Dale PTSA is the Membership Discount
Program. When showing your PTSA card to participating local businesses, they have committed to
supporting our school by offering discounts when you eat or shop at their business. Also, students
may join to receive these great discounts as a TDHS PTSA member!

Please see the following page for the local businesses that participate in our program.

           News from the Volunteer
                Coordinator

Dear Parents,

Volunteers are the backbone of all PTSA’s! Volunteers are about action, caring and
concern for our children! Please be a part of our active group of parent volunteers at Thomas Dale
High School by filling out our PTSA volunteer form and mailing it to the School right away! WE
NEED YOU! Our volunteers may donate little or lots of time but all are vital components of our
school!

All Chesterfield County Schools must have a Confidential Information Application on file
for all volunteers who come into their school buildings to work. THIS IS FOR THE
PROTECTION OF YOUR CHILD. Thank you in advance for calling the phone number at the
bottom of our volunteer forms so that you may be “cleared” through the County’s research system
to serve as a volunteer. These are criminal record checks similar to those many of you have been
through at work, church and as coaches.

We appreciate your effort to make our volunteer system work. Again, we thank you for
your concern and active part as a volunteer.

                                            Sincerely,

                                            Katie Sloan

                             After Prom Volunteer Form

Plans are underway for Saturday, April 26, 2008. I encourage you to volunteer your
time to this event. Our After Prom celebration this past May had over 650 in attendance.
Thomas Dale has a reputation for putting on a great drug and alcohol free evening for the
students from midnight until 5:00 am. It takes a lot of work, a lot of planning and a lot of
volunteers to pull off this event. If you ask anyone who has ever volunteered their time to the
After Prom, they will tell you that it is a lot of fun and a rewarding experience. You do not
have to be the parent of a junior or senior to join our team. We need everyone to
get involved with this. Prom night and graduation night have the highest risk of DUI’s, car
accident fatalities due to drinking and teenage pregnancy among high school students. The
PTSA offers this fun-filled free evening of games, dancing/singing, prizes, food and
camaraderie as an alternative to keep our children safe. Please consider joining us for this
year’s celebration and for keeping this event successful for years to come.

                        Proposed Legislative Program (PLP)

THE PLP is the next step in the PTA legislation process. Members should be given the
opportunity to review and vote on the Policy Statement that will result in the Legislation Program.

LEGISLATIVE ACTION ITEMS (LAI) are requests for the introduction, passage, or defeat of
specific legislation by the General Assembly and/or regulations by the Board of Education or other
appropriate agencies.

POLICY STATEMENTS (PS) are statements of the Virginia PTA/PTSA on general issues and may
be used as the basis for addressing issues before the General Assembly, Virginia Board of Education or
other appropriate agencies.

Legislative Action Items - There are no Legislative Action Items for this year.

Policy Statement (PS) – Virginia PTA supports policy to allow distance and online learning
through Virginia DOE approved coursework for credit for K-12 students who are homebound,
incarcerated, or in alternative placement.

Rationale:
PTA has long held a position of support to expand educational opportunities for all children to reach
their fullest potential. As technology changes, Virginia PTA believes that educational opportunities
should be offered through the most innovative means possible.

In the past, incarcerated students and those at home or in alternative programs did not have access to
most innovative educational programs. Many courses that were previously offered through
correspondence courses are now offered only online or in distance learning labs.

In 2007 the law changed to allow online courses for K-12 students. The Virginia PTA supports this
change in policy and encourages more innovative learning opportunities.
2008 Proposed Legislation Program (PLP) BALLOT
Ballots should be sent to TDHS or emailed to stellaedw@aol.com, by October 18, 2007.

LEGISLATION ACTION ITEMS (LAI) are requests for the introduction, passage, or defeat of
specific legislation by the General Assembly and/or regulations by the Board of Education or
other appropriate agencies.

There are no LAIs at this time. Additional LAIs may be included as the result of Resolutions
presented at the 2007 VAPTA Convention.
