JOB TITLE: MAPPING ASSISTANT
DEPARTMENT: GIS/MAPPING, WHITE COUNTY
STATUS: FULL-TIME, NON-EXEMPT/NON-SUPERVISORY
JOB SUMMARY: Performs technical, research, and clerical assistance for the GIS Technician,
such as collecting GPS data, updating maps, researching records, and other assistance as needed.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Performs field work locating and addressing structures and other features to be used by
White County’s GIS and E-911 systems.
Maintains address, road, and subdivision databases
Updates maps
Types correspondence and reports
Conducts research
Files department records, memorandums, and transcripts
Assists postal officials, attorneys, financial institutions, mortgage companies, and the
general public with locational inquiries.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITON:
Knowledge of GPS operation and mapping techniques.
Knowledge of database design and maintenance.
Knowledge of E-911 numbering system.
Knowledge of ESRI software applications including ArcView.
Skill in maintaining accurate records.
Skill in reading and interpreting maps.
Skill in operating equipment such as personal computers, facsimile machines, copiers,
and map reproduction machines.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in public relations.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Trimble GPS, GPS Pathfinder, ESRI ArcView and
associated programs, desktop and laptop computers, Microsoft suite with strong emphasis on
Microsoft Access.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The GIS Technician assigns work in terms of general
instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures,
accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include county and department policies and procedures, as well as
standard mapping techniques. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require
some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related mapping and administrative duties.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to maintain an updated GIS system and
provide administrative support to the GIS Technician. Successful performance helps ensure
proper operation of White County’s mapping and E-911 systems.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, property owners, attorneys,
surveyors, appraisers, real estate agents, developers, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information and
provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or in an
automobile but also includes year round field data collection in occasionally remote, physically
demanding areas of the County. Individual should be able to walk 2 miles over the course of a
day and lift objects 30lbs. in weight.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work includes office, automobile, and field work components.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations
at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent; sufficient
experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually
associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position
for one to two years; must have a valid driver’s license.
