Lesson Title : Solar Power to the Nation

Target Audience : Year 9

Outcomes Targeted :

Science – Energy and Change – level 4 “Students compare sources of energy, such as coal, gas,
the sun and wind, in terms of their ease of use, cost …”

Estimated Duration : ½ hour

Lesson Aim : To introduce the students to the concept of solar power. Also to provide an
oportunity for students to show prior knowledge.

Lesson Summary : Class reads a “Behind the News” story and uses this information to complete
a KWLH chart.

Resources Required :

You will need:
    Computer and projector with Internet access

OR

Students will need:
    Computers with Internet access
    KWLH Proforma

Class reads a “Behind the News” story and uses this information to complete a KWLH chart.


LESSON PLAN

Part One
Students will be conducting a KWLH chart about „solar power‟.

A class brainstorm will allow students to fill out the “Know” column.

Class reads transcript from a “Behind the News” story – to be found at
http://www.abc.net.au/tv/btn/stories/s1960832.htm .

Students use this reference to complete the “Learnt” column of the chart.

Students should now consider and write down 3 things that they “Want to Learn”.

Students also think about “How I/we can learn more”.

You might choose to let early finishers come up and write their “Want to Learn” ideas up on the
whiteboard.
