Science Careers MARINE BIOLOGIST • Marine Biologists can work in a laboratory, classroom, an industrial setting, a zoo, or in the field. They may work alone or with engineers, technicians, and other scientists at various stages of research or product development. Marine Biologists who work in the field may experience extreme weather and usual working conditions and be required to put forth a lot of physical effort. They may be on the road for short trips or at an outstation post for several weeks or months. Those in government or industry may work a five day, forty hour week. The people that work in colleges and universities may have longer, more variable hours. The schedules of field researchers are usually adjustable to suit the type of study being done. VETERINARIAN • • • Veterinarians should have an affinity for animals and the ability to get along with their owners. Veterinarians play a major role in the healthcare of pets, livestock, and zoo, sporting, and laboratory animals. Some veterinarians use their skills to protect humans against diseases carried by animals and conduct clinical research on human and animal health problems. Others work in basic research, broadening the scope of fundamental theoretical knowledge, and in applied research, developing new ways to use knowledge. Veterinarians often work with a team of professionals, including technicians and qualified support staff. ZOOKEEPER • • • Zookeepers take care of wild animals in zoos and animal parks. They feed the animals, clean their living spaces, and work to keep them healthy. Zookeepers watch the animals to see if they are sick or hurt. Keepers need to watch and listen carefully to notice any changes in behavior. Keepers write detailed notes about each animal and tell a veterinarian if there is a problem. Zookeeping can be a dirty job. Keepers have to clean exhibit areas. Many keepers work outside in rain, heat, and every other kind of weather. They sometimes carry heavy containers of food. And because animals eat every day, some keepers work on weekends and holidays. DOCTOR/NURSE • • Medical Doctors diagnose and treat the diseases, physiological disorders and injuries of patients. They provide primary contact and continuous care toward the management of patients' health. They usually work in private practice, including group or team practices, hospitals and clinics. Residents in training to be general practitioners and family physicians are included in this unit group. As a physician, your schedule is full with the responsibilities of your practice. On-call schedules, teaching, patient care, and scheduled procedures can make it hard to have a normal life. LAW ENFORCEMENT • • • • • • • • Carefully investigate all complaints. Respond to calls in a safe manner. Provide patrol in assigned areas. Prevent the commission of crimes using lawful means. Resolve conflicts. Assist citizens Provide Rescue Services/First Aid when appropriate Be familiar county, local neighborhoods, and local business. ASTRONAUT • • Astronauts help other scientists by gathering information about the environment in space and on other planets, and by observing the earth from a great distance. They study the Sun and how it affects Earth, and work with satellites in space to help to predict earthquakes and tsunamis. All astronauts share much of the same basic training, but there are two different professional specialties. Pilot astronauts, who are almost all drawn from the military test pilot community, actually pilot the shuttle. Mission Specialist astronauts are trained on shuttle systems, conduct the on-orbit science experiments and do the space walking. There is a fair amount of cross-training so that mission specialists could pilot the shuttle (at a pinch) and most pilots could space-walk if necessary. MILITARY • Being a leader in the Military requires certain qualities. A leader exhibits selfdiscipline, initiative, confidence and intelligence. They are physically fit and can perform under physical and mental pressures. Leaders make decisions quickly, always focusing on completing the mission successfully, and show respect for their subordinates and other military officers. Leaders lead from the front and adjust to environments that are always changing. They are judged by their ability to make decisions on their own and bear ultimate moral responsibility for those decisions. METEROLOGIST • • Meteorologists do many things, some of which may surprise you. Besides forecasting, they study the atmosphere and investigate the forces shaping weather and climate. They also try to predict how human activities affect the planet. In the US, the government employs the most meteorologists, particularly at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which includes the National Weather Service. Meteorologists work for the military or other federal agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Department of Energy, and the Department of Agriculture. University meteorologists teach and do atmospheric research. There are also meteorologists who advise industry and private firms. MOVIE SPECIALIST SPECIAL EFFECTS • • • • • • • • • Creating particle systems that represent both realistic and imaginary effects. Some examples of these effects are: Explosions, smoke, and fire. Flowing, splashing, and stagnant water. Magical and ethereal effects. Working with art and programming leads to develop new features for particle systems in the Vengeance Engine. Painting textures and modeling meshes for particle FX. Strong animation skills apparent in portfolio. Strong traditional art skills (drawing, painting, or sculpture, etc…). 3D modeling and texturing skills a strong plus.
