Helen Beatrix Potter was born in South Kensington,
London on July 28, 1866.

Her family was from typical Victorian high class society - they
lived in a large house, had many servants, and Beatrix was
cared for by a nurse.

Her brother, Betram was sent away to school while
Beatrix stayed at home with her governess who taught her
music and art and encouraged her to read and write. She
hardly ever saw other children and she was very shy but
she wrote a lot in her diary -- in a secret code!

                                     Spot
Beatrix said he was a "philosophical
traveller" because he loved to ride in
carriages and always jumped in first
whenever anyone in the family was going
                                     out in one.
Even though Beatrix didn’t get to play with other
children, she had many pets to keep her company...

Benjamin Bouncer
Bouncer was Beatrix’s first per rabbit. She
bought him secretly from a shop in London and
sneaked him in her nursery in a paper bag! He
was the model for many of her drawings.

Bouncer loved hot, buttered toast and used to
hurry into the drawing room when he heard the
tea bell!

                                    Peter Piper
“"Peter used to lie before the fire on the hearth rug like a cat.
He was clever at learning tricks, he used to jump through a
hoop, and ring a bell, and play the tambourine. I saw him
once trying to play the tambourine on a straw hat!”
Even though Beatrix didn’t get to play with other
children, she had many pets to keep her company...

  Mrs. Tiggy Winkle
  “Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle is a great traveller. I don’t know
how many journeys she hasn’t done. She enjoys going by
train, she is always very hungry when she is on a
journey. I think you must ask Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle to
tea, she will drink anything out of a doll’s tea cup!”
Even though Beatrix didn’t get to play with other
children, she had many pets to keep her company...

                                   Xarifa
Xarifa was Beatrix’s favourite dormouse. When
                                   she died, Beatrix wrote:

“Poor little thing, I thought at one time she would last
as long as myself. I believe she was a great age. I
wonder if ever another dormouse had so many
acquaintances . . . I think she was in many respects the
sweetest little animal I ever knew.”
Even though Beatrix didn’t get to play with other
children, she had many pets to keep her company...

Pig-Wig
Pig-Wig was a black Berkshire pig that Beatrix
bought from a pedrigree pig farmer. She wanted to
put it with the rest of her pigs on her farm but her
farm manager refused to let near the others. So
Beatrix kept Pig-Wig in a little basket by her bed
and bottle fed it day and night. It became her
devoted pet and followed her everywhere!
   Other pets Beatrix kept were...

                             Frogs

                                                     Newts

                       Ferrets

                                        and a Bat

She would talk to her pets for hours and she loved to sketch them.
The more she practiced, the better she got!
Beatrix Potter always went with her family to the countryside
every summer for vacation. One year, they went to the English
Lake District and she loved it so much that she worked hard to
protect it for the rest of her life.

From the time Beatrix turned 15, her parents made
her in charge of their household -- they only wanted
her to stay at home and not go to school or work at
all! Her uncle tried to help her become student at
the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew -- But they
wouldn't let her study there because she was a girl!
So she studied on her own and drew all her observations...

In time, she became widely respected throughout England as an expert mycologist!
Beatrix Potter became most famous for her
children's books about the animals she used to
observe and play with in the English and Scottish
countryside -- sometimes she would even sneak
them into her home! She wrote her first book for
the 5 year old son of her governess. People thought
it was so good that they told her she should publish
it. This book became The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

At first she couldn't find anyone who wanted to
publish her book. So she published 250 copies of it
herself with her own money and black and white
illustrations. She either gave them away or sold
them for only half a penny each because she said,
"Little rabbits cannot afford to spend six shillings."

In all, Beatrix Potter wrote 23 small format children's
books but had to stop writing when her eye sight
became poor in the 1920’s.
Beatrix became engaged to her published, Norman Warne,
but her parents did not like him because they were a rich
family and Norman was only a poor tradesman.

Sadly, Norman became sick and died only a few weeks after
their engagement. Beatrix was heartbroken, but she wrote
in a letter to his sister:

"He did not live long, but he fulfilled a useful, happy life. I
must make a fresh beginning next year."
After Norman died, Beatrix bought
Hill Top Farm in the Lake District
of England. She used the money
she earned from selling her books
to buy more land for her farm with
the help of William Heelis, a
lawyer.

In 1913, she married William and
                                     they moved into the farm
                                     permanently.
When she became older, she and William
moved into Castle Cottage in the village
of Sawrey where the children there called
her "Auld Mother Heelis" because of her
grumpy demeanor -- Maybe she was so
grumpy because she was very worried
about her sheep, preserving her farm and
the countryside, and World War II.
Beatrix Potter died on December 22, 1943. Her body was cremated and her
ashes were scattered throughout the countryside that she loved so much.
