International Tuba Day, celebrated annually on the first Friday in May
Joel Day founded International Tuba Day in 1979
Since its inception, International Tuba Day has been celebrated around the world
   http://www.tubaday.com/homepage.php
International Tuba Day - first Friday in May
International Tuba Day recognizes musicians around the world who struggle with the
weight and size of their big instrument. It's truely an important musical instrument, that
no concert or symphonic bandleader would want to be without. It's big, deep sounds
provide lots of character and "Oomph" to concert music.
Can you imagine a Tuba-less marching band!?
   Origin of International Tuba Day:
International Tuba Day was founded by Joel Day in 1979. At the time, Joel was a tuba
player in a band at Lower Merion High School in Philadelphia, Pa. He started it as a
result of a lack of respect for tuba and tuba players by his fellow musicians.

Saunders, Valley View School, 30 Montogomery
  http://www.celebratetoday.com/ctbook.html
The World's Largest Exercise Class - Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously)
was created by Len Saunders in 1989 as a method of motivating children to exercise.
ACES takes place on the first Wednesday in May as part of National Physical Fitness
and Sports Month along with National Physical Education Week. It has been labeled as
"the world's largest exercise class" by the media. Since 1989, millions of children from
all over the world exercise together to promote proper health and fitness habits.
  http://lensaunders.com/aces/aces.html
On the national calendar, May is Physical Fitness and Sports Month. The first
Wednesday in May, at 10:00 AM local time, has been Project ACES Day, when
millions of children, parents and teachers all over the world exercise simultaneously in a
symbolic gesture of fitness and unity. In 1992, "Ripley's Believe It or Not" officially
recognized Project ACES as "The World's Largest Exercise Class".
Since 1989, year after year, Project ACES has touched millions of lives.

Each year, on the first Wednesday in May -- which also happens to be the first
Wednesday in National Physical Fitness and Sports Month -- millions of school children
all over the globe exercise together as part of Project ACES.
"Project ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) aims to educate children about
the importance of lifelong fitness and to end the stereotype that children are fat, weak,
and lazy," says Len Saunders, a Montville, New Jersey, phys ed teacher who created
  the program in 1989.

01.5.+1Fr =Broekloze dag (No Pants Day)** ;Note=1e vrijdag mei {m}
No Pants Day is a holiday celebrated on the first Friday in May by not wearing pants
(trousers). The idea of the holiday is to celebrate the freedom associated with not
wearing pants. The recommended No Pants Day attire is thick, appropriately modest
boxer shorts. Other types of underwear, including Bloomers, slips, briefs, and boxer
briefs all work as well. Wearing pants substitutes, such as skirts and dresses, shorts,
and kilts does not count as not wearing pants.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Pants_Day
How long has this been going on?
No one knows for sure how long No Pants Day has been celebrated... some reports
place it as early as '85/'86, but for all we know it started long before then.
We've been actively promoting No Pants Day for 5 years now, ourselves.
  http://www.nopantsday.com/index.php?what=1
No Pants Day is an international 'holiday' occasionally observed in several Western and
other countries on the first Friday in May by not wearing any pants (trousers). The use
of the word pants is the American English version meaning trousers (the item of
clothing covering both legs worn as the outermost garment). The history of No Pants
Day is shrouded in mystery. While there are unconfirmed reports that the holiday was
celebrated as early as 1985/86, there is no known physical record of the origin or first
  practice of No Pants Day.

History Of Mother’s Day
From Afghanistan to Costa Rica, more than 46 countries honor mothers with a special
day, but not all nations celebrate on the same day.
In the United States, for example, it is always the second Sunday of May.
But England's Mother's Day falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent (March 17, this year).
And the International Mother's Day is always May 11.
… Pennsylvania declared Mother's Day a state holiday in 1913.
Congress followed Pennsylvania's lead a year later, proclaiming the second Sunday of
   May as Mother's Day.
   http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~homespun/mdfirst.html
In 1907 Anna Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's
Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia, to celebrate
Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of
May. By the next year, Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.
Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians
in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day.
It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state.
President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming
Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of
   May.
While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times
throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey,
Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of
   May.
   http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~homespun/mdmain.html
…the Congress, by a joint resolution approved May 8, 1914 (38 Stat. 770), has designated
the second Sunday in May each year as "Mother's Day,"

                                          Mei
haar eigen moeder, Ann Reevers Jarvis.
Om 'better mothers, better homes, better men and women' te krijgen had moeder Ann
Katholieken werden enigszins in verwarring gebracht, doordat in hetzelfde jaar paus

                                         Mei
  toenmalige gouverneur, William Glassock.
  methodistische kerk in Amerika.

THE FIRST Mother's Day was suggested by Miss Anna Jarvis, of Philadelphia, Pa., in a
public meeting in 1907. She proposed wearing a carnation on the second Sunday of
May. The first city to adopt the plan was Philadelphia which designated May 10, 1908,
as the first Mother's Day. Mother's Day received national recognition May 12, 1914.

  edities.

International Migratory Bird Day (2nd Saturday in May) - International Migratory Bird Day
celebrates the incredible journey that migratory birds take each year. They travel
thousands of miles between breeding grounds in North America, and their winter
homes in Central and South America. Organizers say this is a day to both support, and
to increase awareness of conservation efforts in support of migratory birds. They also
suggest a field trip into a woods to look for and enjoy migrating birds.

About Bird Day - There are a couple of different days each year to celebrate birds. Three
of these days are: Bird Day, National Bird Day, and International Migratory Bird Day.
These days are celebrated on May 4th, January 5th and the second Saturday in May,
respectively. Bird Day is the oldest of these celebrations. Bird Day was first observed
on May 4, 1894 by Charles Almanzo Babcock, superintendent of schools in Oil City,
                                            Mei
Pennsylvania - according to the Library of Congress. Bird Day is often celebrated in
tandem with Arbor Day - focusing on conservation and awareness. National Bird Day
was established by bird activists to draw attention to the exploit of pet birds and captive
birds. International Migratory Bird Day celebrates the journey that migratory birds take
each year. It was initiated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Smithsonian
Migratory Bird Center and Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology in 1993. They encourage
bird festivals, bird walks and education programs across the United States.
International Migratory Bird Day aims to raise awareness of the environmental problems
that are making things difficult for these birds - leading to serious declines in many
species - and to let people know what they can do to help.

Saturday in May each year, encourages bird conservation and increases awareness of
birds through hikes, bird watching, information about birds and migration, public events,
and a variety of other education programs. IMBD was created in 1993 by visionaries at
the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, and is
now run by Environment for the Americas. IMBD continues to focus attention on one of
the most important and spectacular events in the life of a migratory bird -- its journey
between its summer and winter homes. Today, it is celebrated in Canada, the U.S.,
Mexico and Central America through bird festivals, bird walks, and education programs.

31.5.-1Mo-2Dy =Jessup - Saint Ubaldo Day, Race of the Saints (17:30) ;Note=Saturday

Saint Ubaldo Day is the Italian-American version of the Italian holiday, La Festa dei Ceri
(a.k.a. "La Corsa dei Ceri"), which is held in Gubbio, Italy.
Saint Ubaldo Day is held every year at the end of May in Jessup, Pennsylvania.
It is always accompanied by a hose company carnival in the same week.
Saint Ubaldo Day is the climax of the festivities.
Procession - Although called "The Race of the Saints," the actual events are more of a
procession. Like in Gubbio, the three statues of the saints, Saint Ubaldo, Saint George,
and Saint Anthony, are carried through the town by runners who hoist the statues onto
   their shoulders, supported by pads.
The statues are always carried in that order; thus, Saint Ubaldo always "wins" the race,
followed by George and then Anthony.
   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Ubaldo_Day
St. Ubaldo Day in Jessup - In Jessup, St. Ubaldo Day is always held on the Saturday of
Memorial Day Weekend. [Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is
observed on the last Monday of May]
One of the easiest and most direct translations of "La Festa dei Ceri" or "La Corsa dei
Ceri" is "The Race of the Saints".
Starting and Ending Saint Ubaldo Day
The Alzata - The Ceri are assembled once per year during the ceremony called the
"Alzatta" or "Raising of the Saint".
Early Afternoon - During St. Ubaldo Day, there are traditional feasts and carrying the
Saints throughout the streets of the town.
This serves as a showing off of the Saint, as well as, an opportunity for the men to
   practice carrying the Saint.
La Corsa dei Ceri - "The main procession or "La Corsa dei Ceri" begins at 5:30pm.
The procession stops 9 times for 15 minutes each.
This allows the participants and spectators valuable time to reposition along the route of
   the Saints.

The Indianapolis 500-Mile Race, often shortened to Indianapolis 500 or Indy 500, and
historically known simply as "The 500," is an American automobile race, held annually
over the Memorial Day weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway,
Indiana. The event, billed as "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing", is one of the oldest
and richest motorsport events in existence.
The first "500" was held at the Speedway on Memorial Day, May 30, 1911. The race
was originally advertised as the "International 500-Mile Sweepstakes Race" from 1911-
1916. In 1919, the race was referred to as the "Liberty Sweepstakes" following WWI.
From 1920-1980, the race reverted to the "International Sweepstakes" name, or slight
variations such as "International Sweepstakes Race, Distance 500 Miles." Following
WWII, the race was commonly recognized as "The 500", The 500-Mile Race,"
"Indianapolis 500," or "Indy 500". For the 1981 race, the name "65th Indianapolis 500-
Mile Race" was officially adopted, with all references as the "International
   Sweepstakes" dropped. ((>>#1916th))

Victoria Day (Fête de la Reine) is a Canadian Statutory Holiday celebrated on the Monday
on or before May 24 in honour of both Queen Victoria's birthday and the current
   reigning Canadian sovereign's birthday.
Though, as a national holiday, it is still an official holiday in Quebec, the Quebec
National Assembly dedicated the same day as a provincial holiday: National Patriotes
Day (Journée nationale des patriotes), which commemorates the English-Canadian and
French-Canadian Patriotes of the Rebellion of 1837. Since 1901, 24 May had been
celebrated throughout the British Empire as Empire Day. An amendment to the Statutes
of Canada in 1952 moved the holiday to the Monday before 25 May.
From 1953 Empire Day was made the date of the Queen's official birthday in Canada
by annual Vice-regal proclamation, the link being made permanent in 1957.
In 1958 Empire Day was renamed Commonwealth Day.
In 1977 Commonwealth Day was moved to the second Monday in March, but
Canadians continued to celebrate Victoria Day in May.

24.5.-1Mo =#2002th National Patriots' Day/Journée nationale des patriotes*
  ;Note=Quebec, 1st 2003, Monday preceding 25 May {m}
The National Patriotes Day (French Journée nationale des Patriotes) commemorates the
memory of Lower Canada Patriots' heritage in the Canadian province of Quebec. It is
celebrated in that province on the Monday preceding May 25, the same day as Victoria
Day, a Canadian Statutory Holiday. The holiday now officially commemorates the
memory of patriots who struggled for democratic institutions during the Lower Canada
Rebellion, part of the Rebellions of 1837-1838. Because many Quebecois did not wish
to celebrate Canada's ties to the British monarchy, a competing celebration was set up
on Victoria Day. In 1918, almost two decades after the first celebration of Victoria Day,
the Fête de Dollard was set up by Lionel Groulx, in honour of a 17th century French
settler who was killed trying to defend a French settlement against Iroquois attackers.
The day later became a statutory holiday under both federal and provincial legislation.
The celebration was changed to Journée nationale des Patriotes in 2002, in part
                                      Mei
because the myth of Dollard des Ormeaux lost its appeal to Quebec youth over the
generations, and because of questions over its historical accuracy.
