The Envelope
The Envelope comprises the following information:
UNA Segment Identifies the special characters used. It is required only
if characters other than the standard ones are used.
UNB Segment This identifies the character set used, the interchange
sender and receiver, the date and time that the
interchange was sent and whether or not the
interchange was a test.
UNZ Segment Marks the end of an interchange.
Contains a control total, the number of messages in the
interchange

Character that precedes any of the component element characters appearing in
this segment to signify that the next single character is not to be interpreted a
syntax separator, terminator or release character.
The standard is a question mark. An entry is required if any other
character is used; otherwise a space may be left in this position.
Must Use 05 U005 Reserved for future use O an..1
A space must be left in this position.
Must Use 06 U006 Segment terminator O an..1

The standard is an apostrophe. An entry is required if any other
character is used; otherwise a space may be left in this position.

Notes: This identifies the character set used, the interchange sender and receiver, the date
and time that the interchange was sent and whether or not the interchange was a

Note that the presence of consecutive + data element separators is intended. The
UN/EDIFACT structure expects five data elements are between numbers 0020 and 0035.
These elements are not used in this system. The consecutive + indicators reflect these
null elements.

Identification of the recipient of the interchange.

Name or coded representation of the recipient of a data interchange.
The interchange receiver’s minor customer ID.
Must Use S004 DATE/TIME OF PREPARATION M
Date/time of preparation of the interchange.
This data element has two component elements, both of which must be
used.

Local date when an interchange or a functional group was prepared.
Six digits must be entered in the format YYMMDD.
Must Use 0019 Time of preparation M n4
Local time of day when an interchange or a functional group was prepared.
Four digits must be entered in the format HHMM.
Must Use 0020 INTERCHANGE CONTROL REFERENCE M an..14
Unique reference assigned by the sender to an interchange.
The reference number which distinguishes this interchange from any
other. These numbers are usually allocated in sequence by the sender of
the interchange.
0035 TEST INDICATOR C n1
Indication that the interchange is a test.
This element may be omitted if the interchange is NOT a test. Otherwise
the value 1 should be used.
