The Taxi Fare Estimator is a service to allow
passengers to estimate the cost of a taxi trip,
before embarking on the trip. This service is
particularly aimed at assisting passengers with
estimating a pre-paid fare between 10pm – 5am
- but can be used for a trip at any time of day.

The Taxi Fare Estimator can also be used from
the On Line Estimator, by downloading the Taxi
Gadget (if you have Microsoft Vista installed) or
by sending an SMS.

Using the Mobile Taxi Fare Estimator
Step 1: Enter a Pick up location
This defines the starting point for your taxi
trip. This must be entered. Enter any of:

   • address of pick up location
   • landmark/point of interest of pick up
       location
   • train station / taxi rank name of pick
       up location

Examples
Address: 1 bourke st melbourne
Place of Interest: national gallery victoria
(or abbreviate to NVG)
Train Station: flinders street station
Taxi Rank: collins street – southern Cross
Station
Step 2: Enter a Going to location
This defines the destination for your taxi trip.
This must be entered. Enter any of:

   • address of pick up location
   • landmark/point of interest of pick up
           location
   • train station / taxi rank name of pick up
           location

Examples
Address: 1 bourke st melbourne
Place of Interest: melbourne cricket ground
(or abbreviate to MCG)
Train Station: flinders street station
Taxi Rank: collins street – southern cross
station

Step 3: Enter a Via stop (Optional entry)
This determines if a stop between the start and
end points is to be included during the trip.
Enter any of:

       • address of pick up location
       • landmark/point of interest of pick up
            location
       • train station / taxi rank name of pick up
            location

Examples
Address: 1 bourke dt melbourne
Place of Interest: melbourne cricket ground
(or abbreviate to MCG)
Train Station: flinders street station
Taxi Rank: collins street – southern cross
station
Step 4: Enter the time for the taxi trip
(Optional entry)
You can request a fare to be estimated for
any time of day. The mobile page defaults to
the current time.

    • If you wish to take your trip at a
different time of day select a time
        from the list.

Step 5: Select a High Occupancy Tax
(Optional)

If a larger than standard taxi size is required
to transport 5 or more passengers or a
standard number of passengers (<5) with
excess luggage, then a high occupancy tariff
must be paid. The default option if this is
not selected is a fare estimate based on a
standard taxi.

If you require a high occupancy taxi, check
this option to ensure an accurate fare
estimate is returned.

Note: Passengers requiring a wheel chair
accessible taxi do not need to select this
option.
Step 6: Estimate a fare

Once a Pick Up and Going to have been
entered, and any other optional entries
configured, estimate the fare by clicking on
the Estimate Fare button. If you need to
start the fare over again, select the Clear
button, or go back to the option and re-enter
the data needed.

Once fare is returned a new fare can be
requested by clicking on the New Fare
button.

FAQS / TIPS AND TRICKS

More detailed FAQs about the Taxi Fare Estimator can be found on the Information and disclaimers
page.

The following FAQs are specific to Taxi Fare Estimator Mobile.

Entering Addresses:
• An address can be entered as a full address including: House / Building / Unit Number, Street
Name and Suburb or Town. The Address entry must be separated by spaces otherwise the
    address cannot be processed.

• You can enter a Street and Suburb only or a Suburb on its own.

• If an address without a suburb is entered, a fare estimate cannot be produced, as there may
be many streets of the same name throughout Victoria. The Taxi Fare Estimator will not know
    which location for the street.

• Abbreviated Street Names can be accepted when entering an address, e.g.: St ; Rd; Ave

• A table of commonly accepted street abbreviations is below:

     Avenue Ave Drive Dv
     Boulevard Bvd Lane Lane
     Court Ct Road Rd
     Crescent Cres Street St

• If the address cannot be located correctly by the Taxi Fare Estimator an error message will be
    returned.
Entering Places of Interest or Landmark:
A place of interest (also known as a landmark) can include any of the following types of locations:

    • A sporting venue: Melbourne Cricket Ground
    • A shopping centre: Chadstone Shopping Centre

    • A Tourist Attraction: The Melbourne Zoo

    • A Train Station: Richmond Train Station
    • A Taxi Rank: Clarendon Street – Hilton Hotel
    • A Taxi Rank: Clarendon Street – Hilton Hotel

Points of Interest / Landmarks are often known to people by different names. Some names are

above these are some Abbreviations or Alia names that might be used:
    • A sporting venue: MCG
    • A shopping centre: Chaddy

An exhaustive list of place names and abbreviations/Alias names cannot be supplied due to the
large number of potential instances. Trial and error may be required to learn which place names
are accepted.

Some commonly accepted place names are supplied for reference in the next section.
Alternatively, use the Taxi Fare Estimator Web Application to see if a Place of Interest can be found
in the list. If a place of interest is in this list, then it can be used in an SMS request.
