                                           Preface

Origins

       This environmental directory project stemmed from a need expressed by both
grantseekers and grantmakers. Local environmental groups have been trying to expand their
base of support from different foundations and institutions, but did not necessarily have the time
or resources to search for new foundations that may fund their requests. Foundations expressed
a need to be able to direct grantseekers to other foundations that may have an interest in
supporting their requests. It is hoped that this document will be a useful resource to both
grantseekers and grantmakers.

Format

        The goal of this directory is to provide a resource that presents information on
foundations both locally and nationally that have funded, or might fund environmental
organizations and projects in northeast Ohio. The information included in this directory is based
on extensive research on these foundations. However, the information available did not always
provide the same amount of information on every foundation. Therefore, each foundation is
classified into one of three categories:

      Category I presents full profiles of foundations where sufficient background
          information was available, and evidence of previous local environmental funding. As
          much information as could be assembled from various sources is presented, but not all
          entries are complete.

      Category II presents local foundations and corporate giving programs that have
          expressed an interest in environmental grantmaking. There is no evidence, however, of
          past grants to local environmental groups.

      Category III presents a list of foundations that have expressed an interest in
          environmental grantmaking. These foundations are not local, and little or no
          information was available on their environmental grantmaking.

     It is important to note that this reference guide is meant only as a starting point for research
on potential foundations. Grantseekers are strongly encouraged to use the sources listed below
as well as other sources (i.e. individual contacts) to fully research potential donors. Finally, the
information included in the following profiles is the result of research compiled from a variety of
sources. While all effort has been made to present this information accurately, neither the author
nor The George Gund Foundation is responsible for inaccuracies in source materials.

Sources

                                             3
       A variety of sources were utilized in assembling the information for this resource. They
included:

      The Foundation Center’s on-line database;
    The Guide to Ohio Grantmakers (in association with Ohio Association of Nonprofit
       Organizations, Ohio Granmakers Forum and the Foundation Center);
    Environmental Grantmaking Foundations 2001 produced by Resources for Global
       Sustainability, Inc.;
      Various websites for foundations;
      E-mail responses and survey forms from foundations;
      Donor lists from select local environmental groups;
    Annual reports from individual foundations

Suggestions

    Look at the sample grant section first: This is a good way to know whether or not a
       foundation has a strong interest in funding a certain environmental project. Some
       foundations have funded more environmental organizations than others, and this section
       gives a good idea about the particular interests of a foundation.

    Visit and research the websites of the foundations: Websites were extremely helpful in
       the initial research and they will hopefully give grantseekers a better idea about the
       values and missions of certain foundations.

    E-mail is a good way to inquire about the environmental grantmaking opportunities at a
       foundation. If e-mail is accessible to you, it is a great vehicle to get quick responses
       about whether or not a foundation would be interested in funding certain projects.

    Use the appendix: The web resources listed at the end of this directory were very useful
       in the research done for this project.

    Purchase a subscription to the Foundation Center’s on-line directory: If you are doing
       extensive research on environmental grantmakers, this directory can be very useful.
       Subscriptions can be purchased on four different levels (basic, plus, premium and
       platinum) and on a yearly or monthly basis.

    Many smaller foundations do not have websites. When there is little or no information
       available on a certain foundation, search the IRS 990 forms. 990’s are available on
       Guidestar’s website: www.guidestar.com.
