“I can do all things through Christ, because He gives me strength.”
                                                  Philippians 4:13 (NCV)

I received an early birthday present this week from my American penfriend of
many years—a Barak Obama plastic doll! It’s been fun to push a little red button
and hear the president and great orator deliver his inspirational words. Many of
Obama’s challenging and election winning quotes are recorded, and one
particularly resonated with me. “Together, ordinary people can do extraordinary
things.” Certainly the first African/America president has promised to deliver
extraordinary things at a time when his country, and indeed the world, needs that
to happen.

I thought about the words recorded in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things
through Christ, because He gives me strength.” (NCV)

That is a very positive statement to claim. The gospel of Jesus Christ, which was
impacting the world at the time Paul wrote these words, was built on caring for
one another, hospitality, and meeting practical needs. As well as praying for Paul,
the Philippians gave practical support. The truth is that, when it comes to faith,
body and soul, material and spiritual, are all included in our experience of the life
of faith.

People have a vast array of needs, and demands and expectations can be so
great. The times that we live in are indeed demanding and call for creativity,
energy and passion, compassion and integrity. In our own strength we are
overwhelmed and inadequate for the task. But the truth of Christian discipleship
is we are not alone. Ordinary people can do extraordinary things because they
have Jesus.

As I write this, it is President Obama’s birthday. May God bless him to be all God
wants him to be, and may God bless you in the knowledge that we have all we
need to do something amazing and make a difference in someone’s life today.

Questions:

   1. Think of an ordinary act you regularly do—can it be made extraordinary
      for God?
   2. Speak/reflect on a time when you have done something, and at the end of
the event you were able to say with Paul, “I can do all things through
Christ, because He gives me strength.”
   3. Is there an activity or thought that you are currently struggling with,
which you need to give over to God so that he can do the extraordinary?
