HOW TO COMPARE THE INFORMATION ON YOUR W-2 FORM TO YOUR FINAL 2006 PAY STUB
What You’ll Need: 1. Your W-2 form 2. Your final pay stub for 2006 3. The Pay Stub Template (the Excel file named Template-Compare W-2 to Paystub). This is an exact replica of the layout of your pay stub except that it does not contain any pay data. Rather, it shows the location of the various pieces of payroll data that are transferred to your W-2 form.
Comparison Instructions: Look at your W-2 form and locate the box that contains the information you’re interested in (for example, “Wages, Tips, Other Compensation”, “Medicare Tax Withheld”, and so forth). Note the number in the upper left-hand corner of that box (“box number”). Look at the Pay Stub Template and find that same corresponding box number. Now you know where that piece of information is located on your personal pay stub. Look at that same location on your final 2006 pay stub and you will find the data you’re interested in.
Example: Jane is interested in comparing the “State Wages, Tips, Etc.” figure on her W-2 with the figure on her final 2006 pay stub. On the W-2, the “State Wages, Tips, Etc.” box number is #16. She looks on the Pay Stub Template and finds the shaded area that is labeled “Box 16”. Now she knows where that information is located on her personal pay stub. (Box 16 is located near the lower left of the stub.) Jane looks at her actual final 2006 pay stub in the lower left area and finds the figure she was interested in. Finally, Jane compares that figure to the amount in Box 16 on the W-2. The figures should match exactly.
