Students choosing the language track must demonstrate proficiency in one language, in addition to, equal to or beyond the level required in the second year of college coursework. Proficiency can be certified through coursework (verifiable by providing the Government Graduate Office with a copy of the syllabus and a transcript indicating the grade if courses are not taken at UT), exam (given through the Measurement and Evaluation Center) or letter from a UT faculty in one of the language departments certifying that the student has reached the required skill level. Students whose native language is not English, and whose dissertation requires the use of their native language, can petition the Graduate Adviser for satisfaction of this requirement. A letter certifying proficiency is still required.
