                                 Percent of Change

                         Ten years ago, Max’s comic book was worth $2.50.
               Now it is worth $13. Find the percent of increase in value.

          amount of change = 13 – 2.50 = 10.50
                                 10.50    amount of change
                             P = 2.50     original amount

          10.50       2.50        4.2     Use a calculator to divide.

                              = 420%      Use a calculator to divide.
          The percent of increase in value is 420%.

          Check for Reasonableness 420% of 2.5 400% of 3. Since 400%
          of 3 = 12, which is close to 13, the answer is reasonable.

                                 Percent of Change

                         Andre changed the height of his basketball hoop
               from 8 ft 4 in. to 9 ft 2 in. Find the percent of increase.

         8 ft 4 in. = 8 • 12 + 4 = 100 in.           Write measures in the
         9 ft 2 in. = 9 • 12 + 2 = 110 in.           same units.

         amount of change = 110 – 100 = 10

                10         amount of change
         P = 100           original amount

            = 0.1          Simplify.

            = 10% Write the decimal as a percent.

         The height of the basketball hoop increased by 10%.
